A tiny nation encircled within the Divine Authority, San Mare is protected by its walls... and its trade. Despite it's small in size, San Mare is a very prosperous little state, with many of its citizens being richer than in other parts of Liwilai, or even the world. Even the general peasant can afford quite a bit more, and poverty is relatively uncommon. This is mostly due to San Mare being responsible for much of Corniola's banking business.
