The afterlife for all Goryeans begins by crossing three rivers, each of which has its own bridge. While there are certainly those who do not find the rivers, instead becoming Unknown, those who find their way there are able to cross where they will be judged for the actions of their life and awarded rest and a new life based on the judgment. For those who do well, the next life is one full of fortune and blessings, the kind of life that their soul would enjoy regardless of what caste that might be. For those who do poorly, they would return as something which gives them a chance to overcome the flaws of their past or, in the worse cases, as something which is an outright punishment. This does result in a common saying "You're going to come back as a chicken" which is used as either insult or warning.
The three rivers are Mun (Gate) River, Jangbyeong (Barrier) River, and Gyunhyeong (Balance) River.
Once having fully crossed the rivers, the deceased are given a chance to rest and cleanse themself. They may stay here as long as they like, with many choosing to stay until particular family members or friends join them. This place is Unknown, an endless field of flowers with a guest house within it. This place is the realm of JeoSeung Saja and the mysterious Gardeners of Seocheon.
