Musth.

While elephants are almost always a calm and placid species, the adult males change completely during an annual period known purely as "musth." Recognizable by leaking temporal glands between the ears and eyes, when a bull enters musth they are pumped full of so many hormones they are filled with a blind rage of frustration toward anything near them. Thankfully, this nightmarish state only lasts a few days, granted older bulls stay in musth for up to a month.
