Called a "dwarf mastodon" by some, Notiomastodons are mistakenly similar towards mastodons and elephants but show a distinct classification as a member of the family of "proto-elephants" or gomphotherids. Behaving largely identical towards other elephants, notiomastodons are largely more peaceful and have large family units.
