Madlyn sat in the small office of her constabulary on the corner of Grime and Charter. She hated the day shift it made her skin itch. She’d served as a constable for over a decade and remained when the Craven King killed the Count. There had been a dramatic change to the City, some for the better and many things for the worse.
She like many of her kind were given a simple choice disavow the Count and bend the knee to the Craven King or be destroyed. Most chose the Craven King those that did not, vanished overnight.
The rapid expansion of the city and squalor it brought raised many new challenges but for her service she lived a life of luxury and could feed on designated humans that chose to allow the Vampires to feed from them. Her administrator was one such human “Arther”, quite a handsome young man who worked diligently. She’d developed an odd fondness for him over the last year and they had entered a monogamous relationship her feeding and him gaining the affection and intimacy he desired. He looked tired sat across from her at his small desk. Shed have to give him a break for a while or it might not end well for him.
Last night’s paperwork was completed the “Topsiders” had encountered a Ravenous Ogre which had attacked one of the Dark Ael Traders that visited the Marivel District of the City.
The Topsiders had reacted surprisingly well for being new to the City, they had followed her instructions to the letter having stayed locally overnight, signed the correct paperwork to obtain a “visitors pass” in the morning and then carried on their journey. They were headed down to the Vale District, she shuddered at the thought of what lay ahead of them.
She stamped the paperwork with her seal and passed it back to Arther. He smiled warmly. She touched his hand his skin hot compared to her undead flesh. That feeling washed over her again when she was with him… feeling that she hadn’t had for over 5 decades since she was turned.
Like all City Constables she was a female Vampire. She enforced the laws and acted as detective and arbitrator for her district. One constable per district was the norm especially out on the fringes of the city.
“C’mon Arther, let’s go get you a steak and some ale, I think you’ve more than earned it….”
Madlyn followed Arther out of the office and closed the heavy door behind her, she sniffed and raised her hood moments before the oily black rain began to fall again.
