Finally, the party made it to Gnomegarde, the sun now setting. Following the stream uphill to the base of the mountain, they found a natural concavity that waterfall erosion has carved out . The roaring waterfall created a cloud of mist as it plunged into a shallow pool of water, within which rose two small islands covered with two-foot-tall red, green, and purple mushrooms. Several cave openings overlooked the pool from rocky ledges twenty to thirty feet above. The mountain was blocking any sunlight from reaching this place. No sooner than they had stepped towards it when a gruff voice confronted them. After some conversation a three foot figure, clearly a Gnome spoke to them. He was called Steve and informed them that this was a dark time for Gnomegarden as someone...or something had been killing members of the community. He gave them some words for the guards above and vanished into the bushes around.
Going up, the group met Pogara and Ulla, the two main guards of Gnomegarde. Although hesitant to trust them, after some conversation they revealed that something was indeed killing folk and that King Korbozoz claimed it was a monster. Unfortunately he had also apparently gone insane and had barricaded himself in his room, taking King Gnerklilekli prisoner. What followed was a long investigation, where the party went from the kitchens of Gnomegarde, to investigating the odd mechanical barrel crabs and even visiting the dual artificers. Unfortunately, little clue was found so they decided to speak to the King. On the way they ran into Carlin Donella, apparently an old friend of Koraliki Verque, a druid if judged by her equipment. She told them that she had spoken to the king but gotten little of use.
Idris strode forward down the passageway and spoke to the King getting the following shouted past the closed and barricaded door.
No, I’m not coming out, I’m going to wait in here until it’s safe. One of you…no all of you could be a monster, just waiting till I peak out so you can rip my head off! But Korbozoz hasn’t lived it to 343 without being clever. You can’t come in!
It was under us the whole time, you see! The carpet, it started moving and wrapped around Warryn and….OHHHH GODS ABOVE, SO MANY TEETH.
It chased me but I’m still fast, very fast. I got in here and I pushed everything to the door. It thumped on the other side, crashed again and again until it stopped.
Gnerkli wanted to go outside, HAHA fat chance, we made our vows and I won’t let him go and get killed. So….I glued him to the chair. It’s okay I feed him. Have enough mushroom stew for weeks! So go away!

Leaving the King alone they confered together and after some butting of heads they decided that the culprit might by a creature called a mimic. They apparently can take the shape of common household items, carpets, barrels or anything other inanimate. How and why such a creature has come here, they did not know but it was decided this was a good explanation for what happened. While deliberating what to do, Idris as was typical of him, ranged alone, followed by Brutus, Polgaras Mastiff touching stuff, trying to see if any was a mimic. Alas this proved to be unwise as while the party was still deliberating in the artificers rooms on the west side of the caverns, Idris touched the main wine storage barrel with his foot. His foot got stuck.
With a horrifying realisation, Idris looked up and the barrel looked back. Boards turned to teeth and supports turned to tentacles. The mimic had been found.
