Astara is House M'ke's chief wizard. To avoid trouble from the sorcerer-kings, neither she nor her position officially exist; house members immediately deny that anyone associated with House M'ke practices magic. She has not been seen in several months, leading some to suggest that she is dead and others to claim that she is on a secret mission to help restore House M'ke's fortunes. A wizardess of indeterminate age, Astara made her fortune as a mercenary and finally signed on as an agent of House M'ke. Normally, she is the perfect reflection of the master of the house – quiet, contemplative, and unassuming. She does have a temper, however, and she does not hesitate to use destructive spells against any who have wronged her or her house.

Spellcasting. Astara is a 10th-level spellcaster. Her spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 16, +8 to hit with spell attacks). She has the following wizard spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will): Fire Bolt, Mage Hand, Prestidigitation, Ray of Frost

1st level (4 slots): Burning Hands, Mage Armor, Magic Missile, Shield

2nd level (3 slots): Scorching Ray, Misty Step, Mirror Image

3rd level (3 slots): Fireball, Counterspell, Lightning Bolt

4th level (3 slots): Ice Storm, Dimension Door

5th level (2 slots): Cone of Cold, Telekinesis

Arcane Recovery (1/Day). When Astara finishes a short rest, she can choose expended spell slots to recover. The total level of the spell slots can't exceed half her wizard level (rounded up), and none of the slots can be 6th level or higher.

Evocation Savant. The gold and time Astara must spend to copy an evocation spell into her spellbook is halved.

Potent Cantrip. Astara's Fire Bolt cantrip deals extra damage. The extra damage is 1d8 at 10th level.

Destructive Wrath. When Astara rolls damage for a spell from the evocation school and rolls the maximum result on any of the dice, she can deal maximum damage instead of rolling.

Actions

Dagger. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d4 + 2) piercing damage.

Fire Bolt. Ranged Spell Attack: +8 to hit, range 120 ft., one target. Hit: 27 (6d10) fire damage.

Fireball. Astara hurls a fireball at a point she chooses within 150 feet. Each creature in a 20-foot radius sphere centered on that point must make a DC 16 Dexterity saving throw, taking 35 (10d6) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
