The mansabdars are Raam’s city watch. The guard house itself is a short tower too ornate to have been originally built for its current purpose, situated in the centre of a public square, it none the less gives the impression that the guards could be watching you through its perforated wooden walls no matter which corner of the square you are hiding in. The locals say that many centuries ago it was used to house messenger birds and indeed several of the wooden interiors display fluid carvings of winged creatures that either never existed or no longer do so.
