Entry.141-142 - The King of Ashes

After defeating the Bone Devils and Giant Scorpions in the Hellwasp Desert, you continue travelling towards Mount Ashcloud. On your way, you think about a plan on how to deal with the Queen and then the King of Ashes. Happy sends a message to Amon, asking what they can do to help, he answers "ROOOM, DOOORS, SILVER, ORB".

Taking another long rest in Egberts mansion, you make some more plans on how to deal with the dragons. You ascend the steps to Mount Ashcloud, finally leaving the Hellwasp Desert behind you. You deliver the portrait of Queen Pyria to her majesty, who thanks you and immediately checks on some odd tree in a strange forest, visible through the paint of the portrait. Relieved, she allows you the audience with the King of Ashes. You ask not what the tree or forest was about, but you are told that the daughter of the Forgemaster of Embrassil, Nora, will be able to reclaim the ruins that once fell to Othimarun.

You are guided to another room, where the Draakhorn awaits a blow. Only Drem is able to produce a sound - even though he used magic instead the raw strength of his lungs. The blow summons Poadois, the King of Ashes to the top of the volcano. The biggest dragon you have ever seen, also the largest creature you have ever encountered, lands before you. As he turns into a 3m big dragonborn-ish form, he immediately points out his knowledge about you slaying his son Othimarun, and that he only lets you live because you have been blessed by one of his brothers (Zios).

You explain the situation, inform the dragon of the coming war and the plan of morlin, and that you need to help the Lorekeeper back to the material plane. The king disregards your wishes and tells you he knew all along, having been informed already in the Elder Council and by Leylith even before. As he takes you to Amon's location in the plane of fire, he explains his own plans. He created his army of Flameseekers in only a few weeks and plans to burn the island Avalon to the ground, and everyone on it. He wants to destroy anyone desiring to use the machine on the island, then either dismantle the machine or shift it slowly into the fire plane where he can defend it against evildoers. He proclaims himself as the eternal guardian, and tells of his past achievements, defeating great evil, banishing unkillable creatures, all in the shadows of time. No one sings songs about him, most don't know about him, but he was often the one to save the mortals from epic threats.

Reaching the strange temporal anomaly that seems to be located at the same spot where the island avalon is in the material plane, you see a giant silver dragon stretched unnaturally, almost frozen in time, trying to get away from the singularity. Poadois explains that he is responsible, that he wanted his annoying little brother Amon out of the way.

You try to convince the red titan to help rescue Amon, but he remains adamant. He tells you that he plans to attack Avalon in 43 days, and that you should prevent anyone from entering the island, if you wish to save their lives. In the end, you are brought back to Mount Ashcloud without the Key to the Room of Many Doors, but with a hint on how to get one. In return for singing songs about the King of Ashes in the material plane, Egbert receives a hint, that all of the Elderdragons own a key, and that one of them in particular will surely help out.

You leave the plane of fire, leaving Qizenya behind, as Happy communes with Zios, convincing him to lend his key for a while. Back at home, you are attacked by Janna, who defends your Guildhall with a repaired ballista against the creatures that come through the still open tree-portal. She greets you all and asks for new presents. She updates you on what has transpired in the 5 days you were gone and you discover that she nurses a giant Abyssal Squirrel "Mr Squirrel", that has laid eggs into the walls. You destroy the eggs but the squirrel flees into the night. You call it a day and as you awaken, a green-shimmering key appears in Happy's hand...
