When Derdil and his companions first met Aalis, he had released an Earth Elemental during work at a fish ladder. The elemental destroyed parts of the ladder, causing Aalis to fall in the stream. Gar saved him.
As punishment for his behaviour, Aalis had to show the adventurers the way to the woman he knew as Varanis.
