KA24. Battle at the Dam

Emerging from the Kessian Temple (see KA23. The Creatures at the Temple), Arc, Elias Minch and Smith found themselves adjacent to the river.  Realising that they needed to get to the dam that overlooks Vathirond, they decided to use some small boats that they find piled up.  Each boat was only big enough for one person, so they each took one and set out into the freezing river.  Going around a bend, they quickly found that the river forks; they all chose to go to the right, the faster but more dangerous path.  Elias Minch took the lead, with Smith behind and Arc pulling up the rear.  Coming around a bend, the first obstacle that they encountered were some vicious rocks; Elias Minch and Smith both found their boats entangled in them, letting Arc slip by and take the lead.  Then, they encountered a branch overhanging the river, with some vines hanging down from it.  Arc tried to duck underneath them, but found the barbs on the vines managed to pierce skin, poisoning the changeling.  Elias Minch decided to try and jump over the branch, but only managed to collide with it.  Fortunately he was able to clamber over the top quickly, and land back in his boat.  Smith used a Firebolt spell to burn away as many of the vines as possible, so that the warforged could pass underneath the branch unscathed.

The river then led them over a waterfall; Arc was unable to stay in the boat, and fell into the freezing water.  Elias Minch and Smith fared better, successfully landing their boats in the water without sinking.  They had no time to sort themselves out, however; they were attacked by the water itself, forming into a shape as if it had anger of its own.  And also a strange crab-like creature, similar to the creatures fought in the Kessian Temple.  The formed water was destroyed quickly, and it fell apart into the river.  The crab tried to escape, which led the party towards the dam.  There they could see a shifter performing a strange ritual with a pair of dragonshard daggers; they realised that this was Tyken Roslof, using the daggers he had obtained from the Kessian Temple to tear through the fabric of reality to destroy the dam, which would then flood the town of Vathirond.

The battle was swift but brutal.  Tyken Roslof used blood magic on the party, cursing the trio as they fought to stop him.  Eventually tired and weary, they found a break when Elias Minch was able to stun the Dark Lantern shifter, and pummelled him to death.  Searching his body, they found the remaining 4,000 gold and some armour that Arc decided to keep.  They inspected the daggers, and realised that the creatures that emerged were from Xoriat, the realm of madness.  Deciding that the daggers were too dangerous to keep, they returned them to Solera Natsu, the high priestess of the Kessian Temple.  Then they returned to Vathirond, where they were met with Palavan.  They told their Dark Lantern employer what had happened; he despatched soldiers to the dam to recover the body of Tyken RoslofPalavan was relieved that this incident did not involve any others under his command, and allowed the party to keep 10% of the 20,000 gold that they had recovered.  He also offered Arc an apology, and thanked them for their service to Breland.  With that, the party returned to Sharn for a much-needed break.
