The letter was worn and brittle, perhaps written fifteen or twenty years ago. A dried handprint of blood could be seen on one side. There was a broken wax seal on it, and the party was able recognise the seal of Breland had been pressed into the wax. Inside, the party found the following, written in hasty handwriting.
We have found it! The reports were true, the phylactery was indeed hidden within the old Broken Howl Mine. Unfortunately while we were searching, the warband led by Kethelrax the Cunning has caught up to us. His kobolds and goblins now surround the wood on three sides. I cannot let them have the phylactery.
I have sent a detachment out of the woods with the phylactery in the only direction that I can send them - to Widow's Peak, the mountain that overlooks our position. There are some ruins at the top; I can only hope that they can find somewhere there to secure the phylactery until reinforcements arrive. The rest of us will make our stand here, and buy them as much time as possible.
To the Brelish forces that find this letter, I urge you - do not let our deaths be in vain. Find the phylactery, and secure it so that the Daughter of Sora Kell will not have the lich's soul.
I remain loyal to the end
