In its heyday, the tenets of Fosterite Arcology were not separate from Fosteritism as a belief system. In retrospect, it was one of the major movements in the field of Arcology (Science). The Post-Fosterite Arcology movement is a direct response to this family of designs.
History
The rise of the Fosterite Arcology mirrors the rise of the Fosterite Empire. Xena Kova was a massively influential figure, as her exegesis of the arcological implications of the The Foster Manifesto constituted the core of the concepts of the design. As the Fosterites built Arcologies instead of cities, their projects soon constituted the majority of those built. Effectively, they commanded the cutting edge of Arcology & Luddite Technology (Science), and heavily influenced those fields. The Fosterite Empire's success in the AI Wars led to greater cachet for the movement, despite the nearly unanimous criticism of its "Manifest Apartheid."
Layout & Social Engineering
The Fosterite Arcology has a caste apartheid built into its sector design. Most notably, the Maintenance Interstices are built not only for access, but for habitation by Delta-Homunculi. The levels designated for Omega-Homunculi have lower ceilings. Every sector is segregated in such a way as to minimize interactions between castes.
Technology
The Fosterites avoided advanced digital technology as much as possible for a spacefaring people, and this is most evident in their terrestrial constructions. Fosterite Arcologies used megalithic counterweights in elevators, pneumatic transit tubes, and various other low-tech innovations. This seemed like an insane Luddite obsession to the outside, until it proved to be a major contributor in humanity's victory in the AI Wars.
Aesthetics
Fosterite Arcologies are undeniably beautiful, tending toward neoclassical or monumental designs. Many of them resemble ancient temples from indeterminate cultures & eras.
The interiors are designed for propagandistic effect, and so the various sectors have different aesthetics.
Sectors
Alpha Sector
Main article: Alpha Sector
Alpha Sector is the most protected in the Arco. It is the enclave for the ruling caste and a limited number of protectors and servants. The Alpha caste is limited almost entirely to Alpha-Humans, with rare exceptions due to the necessity of properly managing the undercastes. Generally, this sector is spacious and opulent.
Beta Sector
Main article: Beta Sector
The majority of the population resides here, mainly Beta-Human in composition though with sizeable minorities of the management portion of lower castes. This sector is reasonably liveable, and the most highly surveilled and patrolled by Gamma enforcers.
Gamma Sector
Main article: Gamma Sector
Gamma Sector is extremely spartan, being almost entirely devoted to the training and indoctrination of the Gamma-Homunculus enforcer caste. As their executive faculties are neutered, they generally have little problem with this arrangement. There is almost no reason for any other castes to venture here, creating a sense of a safe inviolable home among the caste.
The ceilings are highest here, except for Alpha Sector. This is as much to accommodate the height of a Gamma as to insert monumentally-sized propaganda pieces. Most adornments are art-encapsulated admonishments to conformity and obedience.
Much of the sector is devoted to military infrastructure, and its exteriors often host Arcofortifications instead of windows.
Delta Sector
Main article: Delta Sector
Largely composed of the Maintenance Interstices that span all of the other sectors. The design keeps them out of sight for the upper castes while allowing them to keep their machinery working. Narrow, dark & cramped, just how Deltas were engineered to prefer it.
Omega Sector
Main article: Omega Sector
The major portion of LogisticalInterstices are designed for Omega-Homunculus, being shorter and wider than a standard human space. There is some overlap with Delta Sector here, particularly in Infrastructural Interstices. Some areas are quite large, due to the need for heavy machinery to move freight.
Public Sector
Main article: Public Sector
When such an Arco is built inside a sprawl, the ground level & its security perimeter are often open to Outsiders with special clearance. As far as residents go, only the Beta & Alpha castes are allowed to mingle with outsiders. But even then, most refrain - the particularly cloistered culture of Fosterites leads them to believe Outsiders are far more dangerous than they are.
