Memetics as Study of Units of Culture

Originally, Memetics was the study of information and culture using analogies with Darwinian Evolution. Analogous to a gene, the meme was conceived as a "unit of culture" (an idea, belief, pattern of behavior, etc.) which is "hosted" in the minds of one or more individuals, and which can reproduce itself in the sense of jumping from the mind of one person to the mind of another. Thus what would otherwise be regarded as one individual influencing another to adopt a belief is seen as an idea-replicator reproducing itself in a new host. As with genetics, particularly under a Dawkinsian interpretation, a meme's success may be due to its contribution to the effectiveness of its host.

Memetics as Biology of the Mokshaic Membrane

Later, as human understanding of the Mokshaic Membrane became more advanced via contact with the Samsari, we realized that the analogies weren't analogies at all - the memeosphere was an actual manifestation of the thoughts in peoples' heads, and our minds themselves existed in large part on this plane. The Samsari themselves were originally creations of this process who became intelligent enough to manifest themselves into our physical universe.

How it Works

Let's look at an example of a simple form of life. The thing we think of in the present day when we hear the word "meme."

When you consume a stupid internet picture, your brain is making many, many connections. Garfield presents Neon Genesis Evangelion is complex, even limited just to the information it conveys. Add to this the various cultural connections that it evokes, and the logical connections between those that make it funny, and you have a packet of information that would take a very long time to explain to someone not familiar with the properties involved and the communities that consume them.

When a sentient brain consumes this amount of information, on the physical plane its neurons fire and possibly wire, and it goes about its day.

On the memetic plane, that brain has a shadow existence, as does the conceptual ideal of the meme itself. When the two connect, the energy of the mind is transferred to the meme, leading to the creation of a self-contained organism that we categorize as about as complex and sentient as a plankton.

Now, consider more complex memetic structures: instead of the relatively simple Garfield Presents Neon Genesis Evangelion, we are looking at a deep and interconnected structure like Communism. This involves various factual and speculative logical frameworks about society, labor, material interest, class, etc. Obviously a far longer explanation than the previous example. In the Samsaric realm, such a Memeplex
