Emerson High School was a public high school in Gary (City), Indiana, US.
History
Gary School Superintendent William Wirt used the Ralph Waldo Emerson School to be the first to use his new Work-Study-Play system of education, a "Whole Child" philosophy. This philosophy drew international attention to Emerson.
The original Emerson High School facility closed in 2008 due to lack of funds and building dilapidation, including mold. It languished for decades in ruin, a frequent target for vandals or squatters.
Even after the program was generally forgotten, the Whole Child name was still an active Sigil. Accordingly, the Hyperscribes who squatted in the ruins of the building adopted it as their namesake, dubbing themselves the Whole Children. They participated in the Gary Uprising, and were unduly designated the ringleaders. The organization was destroyed and most of its membership executed.
The operation wasn't a clean one, however. Emerson was riddled with Signspells, and the Gary Free State Regime's forces took heavy losses by triggering sigils that triggered strokes, roof collapses, and various booby traps.
