Kubii was the site of a powerful Haaru kingdom, most notable for causing its own downfall through excessive Trunk Excavation

History

Kubiyan Golden Age

Kubii at its height was a major center of Haaru culture, technology and trade. Its population was documented in the lower tens of millions.

Treefall

The fall of Kubii killed nearly the entire population of the tree, with most survivors in the lower end of the trunk below the bulk of excavations.

Most of those living in the lower trunk and Rootlands never saw the sky until after the fall - the experience can be shocking and disorienting to those not used to it. About 95% of the survivor population migrated elsewhere, choosing to live as Transient Haaru (Rename) rather than stay in what was immediately seen as cursed ground.

The Order of the Fall

Those who remained through the migration were either committed to their Hometree, or too hopeless to undertake the life of an emigrant. They undertook to survive in the stump of Kubii, now largely abandoned and slowly petrifying.

Practically, this meant the undertaking of a whole new way of life - the new Kubiyans could no longer rely so heavily on the various symbionts that had provided food, water and shelter.

Significance in Haaru Culture

Kubii is now a well-known cautionary tale against overexploitation in most Haaru cultures. Kubiyan, the epithet for a subject of the kingdom, now refers to a greedy person who is destined to undermine themselves.
