Many interstellar communications are beamed directly to a target, but those who can afford the infrastructure tend to make use of Gate Relays. These are stationary in relation to The Gates, and straddle both sides of the jump. Their internal mechanisms transmit a communication across the jump, bypassing the delay of directly beaming a signal.

Highly sensitive communications are still escorted by ship, reducing the risk of signal interception.
