Deed

The Deed system is a fundamental aspect of Goliath culture, serving as a rite of passage and a means of personal and societal recognition. It is a way for young Goliaths to prove their worth and establish their place within the community. A Deed is a significant accomplishment or feat performed by an individual that showcases their strength, bravery, skill, or creativity.

To undertake a Deed, a young Goliath must first declare their intent to an older, respected member of the community. This elder becomes their witness and guide throughout the process. The Deed itself can vary widely, ranging from slaying a fearsome beast to surviving in the harshest of environments to creating a remarkable work of art or craftsmanship.

Once the Deed is successfully completed, the young Goliath is bestowed with a Deed-name, a title that embodies the essence of their accomplishment. This name is chosen carefully, often reflecting the most prominent or rare aspect of the Deed. It can be inspired by the nature of the feat itself, physical attributes, an animal's traits, or a symbol of the Goliath's newfound strength or skill.

To commemorate the Deed and the acquired name, the Goliath undergoes a ceremonial tattooing process. Intricate designs are inscribed onto their body, depicting symbols, animals, or significant motifs associated with their Deed-name. These tattoos serve as a visual testament to their achievements, proudly displayed for all to see.

In Goliath society, bearing a Deed-name brings honor and respect. It signifies the Goliath's contributions, courage, and abilities. Deed-names become a part of their identity, shaping how they are perceived and recognized within their community. It is a source of pride for both the individual and their family, strengthening their standing and influence among their kin.

However, not all Goliaths carry Deed-names. Those who have committed dishonorable or criminal acts may be deemed Deedless, stripped of their previous accomplishments. To redeem themselves and regain their honor, they are required to undertake a new Deed, often a dangerous or arduous task. This redemption quest can be a perilous path, and success is not guaranteed.

Occasionally, a Jarl, a Goliath leader, may issue a bounty for a Deedless individual of significant crimes. A Goliath who successfully captures or eliminates the wanted person may be rewarded with treasure and bestowed with their own Deed-name as a mark of their accomplishment.

The Deed system serves as a cornerstone of Goliath culture, fostering a spirit of resilience, determination, and competition among its members. It reinforces the importance of personal growth, community bonds, and the pursuit of greatness. Through their Deeds, Goliaths carve their own legends and leave their mark on the tapestry of their society.
