His father is the commander of the garrison of Oiku and also the village's chief administrator due to the importance of the garrison. Due to his father's illness, he has taken over much of the day-to-day duties. He can't stand how their father keeps trying to still run everything even though he is still too ill to do so. He has a done a good job considering he hasn't done his gempuku yet and is only 16.
When Matsu Tsuko moved her staging grounds to Ninkatoshi she offered him a command position in her army. He followed her, abandoning his hometown and its administration for the war to recapture Toshi Ranbo from the Crane.
After his entire platoon was slain he single-handedly held the gap in the line until relieved by a charge of heavy cavalry that helped turn the tide of the battle in favor of the Lion. Subsequently he has been widely regarded as one of the most notable heroes of the entire battle.
