Shinjo Yokatsu

Unicorn Clan Champion

Known as the "Master of Four Winds", he is a quiet man who is more comfortable on his horse than on a dais.

Yokatsu was raised by his grandfather, and grew up hearing tales of his clan's time in the Burning Sands. The day after his gempukku, Yokatsu declined to immediately take the position of clan champion and instead mounted his horse and departed from his home.

He spent the next two years traveling. During his travels he met with strange gaijin, from whom he learned much. One day Yokatsu reached the edge of the Burning Sands. He spent the day mounted on his horse, simply watching and not moving. When the moon rose Yokatsu turned around and left for home, singing songs from his youth.

When Yokatsu returned to Rokugan, he told the tale to his grandfather. The daimyo asked him why he did not complete the journey, why he turned back on the threshold of his homeland. Yokatsu was silent for a long while as he thought. "A homeland is not a place," he finally said. "It is a people."

Yokatsu is not a large man, and is fairly stocky. His bandy legs are slightly bowed from riding, and his gait is rolling. His smile, however, is open and genuine — when he smiles. For the majority of the time he is a stern-looking man, more from discipline than from temperament. His eyes are restrained, and give the appearance of someone who measures every action of those around him. His laugh — when he laughs — is short bursts of glee, rocking the ceiling of any building that contains it. He has a laugh that was meant for the open plain. He keeps his clothing tidy and clean, and much of his court clothing looks new and hardly worn — because it was. Preferring riding leathers when he has the choice. Yokatsu is uncomfortable in any court — including his own — keeping his thoughts to himself. When he makes a mistake, he mutters and curses under his breath, looking horribly embarrassed.
