Shedding Sickness

Disease

The shedding sickness is a disease from deep in the Bētin Jungle. It mostly affects Lizardfolk and other reptilian races, causing their skin to become dry and itchy, and shed their skin much more regularly than usual until the disease has run its course. It is rarely fatal, only in the very young and old, or those otherwise immunocompromised.

Strains of it occasionally leaps the species barrier to infect mammalian races, often as a result of unlicensed Bētin Chameleon traders journeying up to The Beastfolk Heartlands. Unfortunately, beastfolk are not meant to shed their skin, and over seven in ten cases suffer from an agonising death as the skin sloughs off. This high mortality rate causes outbreaks to be brief but deadly - for example, the shedding sickness killed the father and three older brothers of Kamil Talonn.

For this reason, the Grand Bētin University of Life Sciences practices widespread inoculation against the disease, especially in the non lizardfolk Bētin population, as well as travellers outside the country.

Kopiko Kahurangi (using an alternative name of "sloughskin") in Messages of Civilisation mentions that the disease often has outbreaks in the Imperial Troll Military Forces of The Southlands, and that many Trolls can not out regenerate the course of the sickness.
