Temple of the Hooded Hand

Religious Order

The Temple of the Hooded Hand is somewhat of an offshoot of the Temple of the Hand in the Water, being a primarily Lizardfolk church that originated in The Meritocratic Republic of the United People of the Pools. They share several of the core tales and tenets, including that Dezrael himself pulled the Lizardfolk race forth from the waters of Sacred Pool, and blessed them with life. Like the Hand in the Water, the Hooded Hand engage in ritual cannibalism to honour the dead and preserve their strength.

The main dogmatic difference between the Hooded Hand and the Hand in the Water is that the Hooded Hand believes that Dezrael and The Hooded Man are the same being, and that the Hooded Man is the form that Dezrael takes to conduct affairs on Orth without causing those to witness him to go insane. They believe therefore that subterfuge and deceit are not just unfortunate necessities but holy sacraments to bring about change. It is worth noting that the Hooded Hand has long been considered a heretical group punishable by execution in the UPP, which may have skewed their position both on the need for deceit and their desire for change.

The Hooded Hand lacks any central governance, and is by and large passed down family lines, with occasional rare conversions. This, and their persecution, has led to many of the faith fleeing The Southlands for less totalitarian regimes, such as The New Republic of Bēti or the Imperial Troll Empire. The diaspora in such locations often have altered beliefs and practices compared to their kin in the UPP. For example, ritual cannibalism is illegal in the Empire, and strictly regulated in Bēti - only those who specifically request it in their will can be cannibalised.

Within the UPP, the Hooded Hand have ended up as unlikely supporters of Drar-il-soq, who in return has relaxed the heresy laws - Hooded Hand practitioners now only pay additional taxes, as opposed to facing summary execution. This legal shift has soured the relationship between the il-soq and the Hand in the Water, potentially causing the Grey Lake Incident which may lead to civil war in the UPP.
