Fermented Shark

Consumable (foodstuff)

The meat of a Megalodon (a species of shark native to the Troll Homelands and the waters south of The Old World) is toxic normally and is prepared for eating by gutting and beheading the shark, removing the bones and cartilage and placing it in a shallow hole dug in gravelly sand, with the now cleaned cavity resting on a small mound of sand. The shark is then covered with sand and gravel, and stones are placed on top of the sand in order to press the shark so that the fluids are pressed out of the body. The shark ferments in this fashion for 6–12 weeks depending on the season. Following this curing period, the shark is then cut into strips and hung to dry for several months. During this drying period a brown crust will develop, which is removed prior to cutting the meat into small pieces and serving.

Due to this process. it has a squishy, cream-cheese like texture and a strong smell of ammonia that can make it hard to stomach for those not used to it. It is occasionally mistaken and mistranslated to fish cheese, though the two are not similar in the slightest. Under the name hakarl, this is also known to be a delicacy in the Dwarven Mountains.
