Tales Safety Tools

Intro

What are the goals of these tools?

The goal is to create a safe space for RP for a diverse group of players who may have competing needs.  While we try to accommodate as best we can, the fluid nature of the server means that we are sometimes unable to anticipate all player reactions to any given scenario.  Thus, we recommend making use of these tools to customize your game experience.

Who are these tools for?

For the most part, these tools are for the participating players in a scene.  In an RP chat, this is the players actively rp’ing within the scene, not the audience reading.  In the game, this is all players participating in the game.

When should these tools be used?

These tools should be used when a scene or event makes you uncomfortable in a way that cannot be brushed off with little effort, or you anticipate it becoming that way.

When should these tools not be used?

These tools should not be used:
As jokes.  This will result in a timeout and warning.
To avoid the consequences of decisions or unfortunate rolls
As an audience member - if it is not breaking any rules and you aren’t involved in the scene, feel free to mute the channel until it is over.
To cheat.  You should not, for example, red flag a tense situation just to skip to the ideal outcome.

I have a situation not covered by these tools.

Feel free to reach out to an LM!  We’ll be happy to help find a solution.  You can use the comment box or message one of us directly.

Raise Hand and X Card

Raise Hand

The Raise Hand icon is available within Foundry.  Upon clicking it, it will pop up a message viewable to the GM.  It will also appear on the player list.

This is a good way to indicate that you’d like to have attention drawn to you, and can be useful in instances where you have something to contribute but don’t want to interrupt an existing conversation.  To activate it, simply click the button.  To turn it off again, click the button again.

X Card

The X-Card is a way to stop a current scene in its tracks, immediately, with no questions asked.  This can be temporary (if you need to take a break or a breather for safety reasons) or permanent, if the content of the scene is upsetting to you in a way that cannot be managed ingame.

It looks like this.  Notably, the X-Card does not tell the GM - or any players - who clicked it. If you need to discuss things before moving forward, please dm your GM.

General and RP Safety Tools

Green/Blue/Yellow/Red Flags

No Flag

No flag is the default.  It assumes that everything is good and no particular changes should be made.

Blue Flag (:blue_square:, 🟦)
Blue flag is a “just right” indicator.  This can be used in tense scenes where you want to indicate that you are comfortable with the amount of pressure being applied to your character and would prefer it stay to about that level.  (Warning: using this flag and then taking antagonizing in-character action will not keep them from reacting in a realistic manner!)

Yellow Flag (:yellow_square:, 🟨)

The yellow flag indicates that a pause is needed.  Use this to take a break from intense action, to indicate that you need things to slow down, or to pause the action while you message the GM.  (Note: This is a safety tool - for regular “I have to go to work/etc” pauses, use the Pause emoji ⏸️ instead.)

The GM will wait for your all-clear before resuming.

Red Flag (:red_square:, 🟥)
The red flag indicates that a scene needs to stop.  Upon receiving a red flag, the GM will stop the scene and reach out to you to quickly decide how to end the scene with no further discussion.  In this case, the DM would reach out and ask if the player would like to calm Memoria down or simply leave.

The red flag will always result in an immediate end to the scene.

Green Flag (:green_square:, 🟩)

Green flag means that not only are you good, you’d like to be pushed harder!  (Note from Eelings: I was told not to call this a “Hit me!” button.)  Hit green if you want your character to be pushed harder on a subject, such as your character’s values, positions in an argument, etcetc.

Peek Behind the Curtain

Peek Behind the Curtain can be used to take a look at how things got to their present point.  You can use this to find out the reasoning for a call that bothered you, an NPC or plot beat that you aren’t sure about, or to find out more about things like how we designed a boss or game.

Spoilers Policy
Upon request, GMs may give out spoilers.  Please note that this is still only to be used as a safety tool, and we retain the right to say no.  For example, if a plot beat is giving you Bad Stress instead of Fun Stress and you want to know if a “good ending” is possible, or how to get involved in achieving it, you can message us about it.

Please note that any spoilers given are privileged information and are NOT to be shared with anyone else.  Violations of this trust will result in warnings or suspensions - anyone else wanting them must ask us themselves.

A Note About Choice, No-Win Scenarios and Binary Outcomes

Please note that there are no actual “good” or “bad” options in this game - it is a living world, and nothing exists until it is chosen.  Therefore, all choices simply shape the narrative - there are no choices that will lock you out of planned content or lock you into a “bad” ending.  While it is possible for a character to spiral into a no-win scenario, there will be multiple in-character and out-of-character warnings before reaching that point.  They will be obvious, you will not miss them, and you will have to choose to move forward.
