LASTHAVEN
We remove the Curse, and then try to destroy the music box with the hammer of moradin. It disappears before the hammer connects, the demon goddess took it away.
We return to Lasthaven and then head off to the Tower. We realize today is bathing day, and make plans to steal the ring from Sabre Khaludz in the evening.
We meet up with Mouse and Brute, and meet the two young land sharks. They are terrifying.
Bale talks to them and gives over his phoenix eggs. They will keep the eggs viable until we are ready to hatch them.
We return to LastHaven.
Codex does an Augury – is this a good day to steal the ring? And the Results are… WEAL! Codex’s first Weal!
We Teleport to Kingston, and make our way to the Alegan Royal compound. Bale gets mail, which includes the official announcement of the King’s death and the challenges to the throne. There’s also a sad letter thanking us for getting Mary to rest (the girl that Sabre Khaludz killed in the golden house).
We prepare for meeting the Queen and Sabre Khaludz. We meet with Gilbert and discuss the upcoming theft. Gilbert tells us that Pyrrhos was interred the day he died, so he is gentle reposed. He also has spies that have seen the necklace on Sabre Khaludz’s neck. It has a simple clasp, but it is under three layers of clothing. A challenge for Berdyn to steal.
We get to the Royal Palace. The Queen and Consul Sabre Khaludz are there, courting guests. Bale meets with the Queen and offers her condolences for the death of the King. The two speak for a time about the upcoming debates, and the Queen asks if Bale will put in his name for consideration for the throne, and Bale says he has not decided. The Queen says that he is not ready for such a role.
The Queen dismisses Sabre Khaludz for this conversation, and after hesitating (which gets tense) he retreats and lurks in a corner. If there was ever a time to strike, it was now.
We position slightly in front of Berdyn, and Maud casts two spells in quick succession. First she uses greater invisibility on Beryden, and then she creates a still illusion of Berdyn. Berdyn then makes his way towards Sabre Khaludz and manages to perfectly open the clasp and steal the necklace and ring. It turns out the necklace was made of adamantine, so opening the clasp was the best move. He doesn’t immediately realize it is gone, giving us a chance to get Berdyn back and dismiss the illusion.
As Bale and the Queen complete their conversation, Sabre Khaludz realizes the necklace is gone. Bale excuses himself to go to the crypt to see the King, which is appropriate.
We enter the Crypt and Bale sees the King, resting in state in a glass coffin. He looks asleep. Bale takes a moment to regard his grandfather, a man he barely knew, and sheds a tear. We hear a commotion outside. Something is happening.
We head further into the tomb and find the sarcophagus of Pyrrhos and his wife Lucinda. It has been stoneshaped to have no seam, but luckily Codex had Stoneshaped memorized because he had it as a means of possibly sealing away the music box earlier this morning. Weal!
After stoneshaping a seal and opening the sarcophagus, we awaken an Eidelon. This creature of neutrality is powered by Pelor, and punishes those that desecrate the tomb. And we did desecrate the tomb. It possesses a large statue and comes at us. We flee further down, heading into the older part of the tomb. There are plain wooden coffins there, and tiny coffers containing relics of old Peloran priests. This place was once a burial ground for the holiest of the Peloran order. We flee the Eidelon and enter into an underground chapel, a beacon of holiness to Pelor and containing a battered gold chalice on a stone altar. This place has been touched by the Sun God with his presence, and as a result is open to teleportation. We escape, but not before the Eidelon gets a parting shot, hitting Simon and nearly killing him.
We arrive at the Library in Lasthaven, awakening the Quillsharpeners and apologizing to them while hiding the body of the Duke. We sneak the body in the dead of night to our house, and lay him down in one of the bedrooms.
Codex performs a Legend Lore upon the ring, and finds out something surprising. The ring is a standard ring of mind shielding, no changes have been made to it. The soul is enraged and has refused to leave, refused to go on. Pyrrhos is angry and needs to be convinced to leave the ring.
We decide that this is best dealt with in the morning, and Codex casts nondetection upon the body of Pyrrhos and Bale, and then throws a black towel over the ring. This hopefully will delay their investigation and hunt for us. We will speak to the angry duke tomorrow.
