Gates of Everlife
We return to the gates of Everlife, still sealed. The wall near the Necropolis is fallen, but this gate held. We find a note pinned to the gate, from Maud Honeybiscuit Nutter. The note explains that in the winter, the city was invaded by the undead, and the people are mostly slain, with only roughly a thousand people holed up in the noble’s section.
We also see a flag waving a few blocks in, still dry, which means it was hung earlier the morning, because the rain had stopped only a few hours ago. Someone is alive.
Berdyn climbs the wall and lets us in.
Everlife Poor District
The poor district is littered with bodies and wreckage, the bodies still thawing in the spring sun. It is otherwise deserted. A second wall, to the Merchant and middle class district, is up ahead, where the flag was set up. We can hear the undead in the Merchant and Middle Class district, two groups of them.
Berdyn and Bale both unlock the gate to the Middle class quarter, and we go in, ready to fight.
Everlife Merchant/Middle Class District
The middle class district is again, littered with bodies. A group of 8 zombies are milling about, but when we enter they turn and attack.
While we fight and distract the Zombies, Berdyn sneaks past them and to the building with the flag. It is surrounded by a group of skeletons, trying to get in. Berdyn sees a gnome on the roof, this is Maud Nutter, the writer of the note.
Berdyn attracts the attention of the skeletons, and leads them back to us. When they are all grouped up, I turn some of them to provide a means for Berdyn and Maud to return to us. We destroy the remaining undead and retreat back into the poor district, locking the gate behind us.
Everlife poor District
Once in the Poor district Maud tells us of a safe house that she is using, which is nearby the Noble District. We climb the wall to the Merchant/Middle class district and walk along it, getting to the safe house.
Everlife Merchant/Middle Class District
Once we settle down in the safe house, Maud tells us as much as she knows about what happened.
The undead attacked Everlife Barrenfell 12, 219, 4 months ago. They came from the Necropolis, massed outside of the city and the managed to get past the outer walls, she isn’t sure how. The undead overwhelmed the city guard, spread through the city, killing everyone they could find. Survivors are in the Noble District and spread in small groups throughout the city, there are maybe a thousand people remaining.
The people remaining are mostly poor and criminals, all the nobles and most of the middle/merchant class escaped the city when the wall was breached. This is suspicious.
Maud tells us that she knows of a large storehouse that she was unable to get access, which may contain a large amount of foodstuffs. She was gathering supplies for the people that are in the Spire, the holy building at the center of the city, in the Noble District. Master Albrect Johnson, who is an acolyte of Pelor, leads the people in the Spire. Most of the people in the spire are injured and sick, and Master Johnson does his best to tend to them, as he does not have the prayers and spells of his God.
We agree to help her get food for this group. She warns us that the other factions in the Noble District are the criminal gangs that existed in Everlife prior to it falling, and they have swelled in ranks as people joined them in a desperate effort to survive.
We enter the storehouse and are assaulted by swarms of rats, and a handful of giant rats. We manage to defeat them, but make a great deal of noise in the process. Maud is a Sorcerer and her Thunderwave destroy the swarms, but makes enough noise to attract a log of attention. We collect as much food as we can and retreat to the safe house.
