Schattenspiegel

Artifact

9e5c7407-6b72-4e55-9f38-7fbb7626a529.pngThe Schattenspiegel, or "Shadow Mirror," is a cursed artifact of immense and terrible power, said to have once housed fragments of Vlad von Carsteins indomitable soul. Now shattered, its jagged shards are scattered across the Mortal Realms, each imbued with a fragment of its original, corrupting essence. The largest shard lies buried beneath the dark waters of the Schattenmeer, binding its sinister influence to the lake and the Von Schattenmeer dynasty. Those who gaze into the Schattenspiegel’s fractured surface risk their sanity, as the mirror reflects not reality but visions of storms, drowned souls, and monstrous transformations. The shard whispers to its chosen bearer, promising dominion and immortality in exchange for their humanity.

Many centuries ago, Ehrhard von Schattenmeer, the dynasty’s founder, fought against the shard’s dark influence. In his struggle, Ehrhard established communication with the shard, believing its whispers could be reasoned with. Persuaded by the shard’s claims, he became convinced that its immense power could be tamed and used for good, so long as it was guarded well—by the lake itself and the vigilance of his bloodline. The malicious essence of Vlad von Carstein, hidden within the shard, pretended to quiet its malevolence, deceiving Ehrhard into believing that a sufficiently powerful heir could one day use the mirror for the prosperity of the dynasty.

Unbeknownst to Ehrhard, the shard's true purpose was far darker. It lured him into establishing a bloodline whose sworn duty was to preserve and safeguard the shard, not for their own benefit, but to fulfill Vlad’s ultimate goal: to reunite the scattered fragments of the Schattenspiegel across the Mortal Realms. The hidden will of Vlad’s essence planned for the dynasty to unknowingly labor for centuries, building the foundation for the mirror’s restoration. Once complete, it would resurrect Vlad’s full power, unleashing a new undead kingdom upon the Mortal Realms, with the Von Schattenmeer dynasty left as pawns in his shadowy dominion.

The Origin of the Schattenspiegel

9e5c8225-87ea-4a64-a02a-4c08cf636e12.pngThe Schattenspiegel, or Shadow Mirror, is a prototype of soul-binding artifacts like shadeglass. Created in the World-That-Was by Vlad von Carstein, it was forged using the ancient knowledge of Endstones, mystical powerstones of Shyish renowned for their ability to hold and channel the essence of death. Vlad, in his relentless pursuit of immortality and dominion, sought to surpass the limitations of mortal and undead existence. Through forbidden experiments, he infused fragments of Shyishian essence into the mirrored surface of the Schattenspiegel, creating an artifact capable of capturing and manipulating souls.

Unlike the more refined shadeglass of Shadespire, which was later developed from gravesand—a substance echoing the properties of Endstones—the Schattenspiegel was a crude but immensely powerful creation. Each shard of the mirror carried echoes of the countless souls it imprisoned, amplifying their latent power while bending their will to the mirror’s master. Vlad also anchored fragments of his own soul within the mirror, ensuring his survival even in the event of his destruction.

The mirror, however, was not a passive tool. Its fractured surface became imbued with a malicious sentience, born from the collective torment of the trapped souls and the dark essence of Shyish. Over time, the Schattenspiegel became more than an artifact; it was a manipulative entity, whispering promises of power to those who sought to wield it, while subtly steering them toward ruin.

In this way, the Schattenspiegel became the cursed forerunner to the soul-binding arts of the Mortal Realms, its creation foreshadowing the horrors that would later emerge in Shadespire and beyond. A relic of ambition and hubris, it remains a testament to the peril of meddling with the forces of death.
