Shielding is a medium level energy spell that can be used to block attacks. It can be fine tuned to block only spells or only physical objects, but the base spell blocks everything. While shielding can be used to make you invulnerable, each attack against the shield will conflict with your concentration on the spell, so most shields are single use.
