The Drake is an evolved form of Dragons, those who tried to hide from the Giant hunters instead of fleeing to the frozen north. The most noticeable of them were hunted and killed, leading Drakes to evolve to be much smaller and slimmer, some even with the ability to change their skills to better hide in different areas. Eventually after The Fall of the Giants, those who survived the fallout and the wasteland were tamed to be mounts by the descendants of the Giants, known as the Hostis.
Modern day Drakes have lost the ability to breathe fire, and their impressive size. They, however, have retained their tough scales and love for gold, even gaining the ability to change the color of their scales to better hide in different environments.
