Elves are found everywhere in the world and vary greatly in their physical characteristics; the one similarity they share is their height and general slender build.

All elves are the same species and can have children, but elves in general have biology that acts more by magic than science. Their fertility is extremely low; a couple committed to having as many children as possible may be blessed with only one or two over four centuries. And then there are rare exceptions where an elf couple may have twenty or thirty children in a century. Elves can store zygotes in a state of suspended animation for over three centuries before developing them and giving birth, and sometimes there's parthenogenesis - none of it is conscious and generally every baby elf is celebrated as a unique miracle without too much fuss about where it came from. Almost all elves are matrilineal.

Types of Elves:

Farland Elf: Mysterious elves that are masters of stealth and disguise. They can change their skin and hair colors at will, and have extreme control over their facial muscles to the extent that they can change their features for short periods of time. Home: The Human Lands.

Fat Elf: Not an elf at all, just the dwarvish word for "human".

High Elf, East Coast: Skin is generally quite pale, hair is usually a pale gold to near white color, but there is a significant minority of hair colors from reddish-blonde to jet black. Home: the East Coast.

High Elf, West Coast: Skin colors range from a bluish-black to extremely dark brown. Hair is usually clear, which appears white in the light, but rarely a child will be born with pigmented hair that will follow the East Coast High Elves' patterns. Home: the West Coast

Moon Elf: Their skin is naturally very pale but also contains pigments they control - they can change from a pale milk to a deep chocolate color in just a few seconds, and can control different areas of their skin separately to create simple patterns. Their hair is usually very dark and thick. Home: the far western edge of the Northern Wastelands.

Mountain Elf: Their skin is usually a greyish brown color, and their hair runs to shades of green. They are stockier than other elves, and have very sharp front teeth. Of all the elves, the most solitary and least likely to leave their homes, which are in the southeastern mountain ranges.

Sea Elf: Their skin is a silvery blue, and is covered in very thin silver scales. Their hair ranges from white to deep blues and greens. They can breathe underwater for long periods of time but will become ill if they don't breathe air regularly. Home: All of the oceans.

Sky Elf: Not actually from the sky, but they do have soft downy feathers instead of hair. Their patterns and coloration have the most variance of any of the other elves. Home: The western mountain peaks.

Sun Elf: Dark brown to golden skin, with bright hair that ranges from copper to gold. Eyes are almost always a golden color. Freckles are common, and ears stick out more horizontally than other types of elves. Home: The southwest and southeast, but weirdly not the southern bit in the middle.

Wild Elf: The "short" elves, both sexes are usually under 6' tall. They have a much greater variety of skin colors, including stripes and spots running in some families. Hair colors tend to the brownish ranges, but may also be striped with the more unusual pigments. Home: mostly the middle plains, up to the northern wastelands.
