The Dueling Grounds

This location is destroyed.

An unfortunate and unpopular truth is that unregulated dueling has a costly effect on the environment. One such example of this is the lawless dueling grounds southwest of Andorough, which is a ransacked and ruined wasteland with lifeless soil and dry, dead grass for miles around.

A long time ago, these dueling grounds were home to thousands of species of tropical plant, animal, and other life, but the introduction of the duel-adoring stickfigure species to the lands brought them to ruin with no chance of bouncing back on their own. Nowadays the terrain is abstract, boulders and rubble and artifacts from warriors and duelists of the past littering the ground.

Few people wander these lands as now it is illegal within Andorough's jurisdiction to duel in the dead lands without supervision. Those that do usually do so in an attempt to find artifacts and collect or sell them, as trade of historical artifacts is huge among wealthy collectors. Some say the blade, and the grave, of one of the most legendary warriors of all is wedged somewhere in the ground as a landmark in the very center of the dueling grounds. It is commonly agreed upon to not desecrate the grave of this legend, as he was an important part of Cenaran history.

Environmental activists, controversial in their fight to save what is left of the uncolonized lands from reckless dueling, have successfully lobbied their way into passing new Andorough laws to enforce dueling taking place in designated locations within and outside the city. These same activists have taken to themselves to begin restoring life to the lands by enriching the soil with fertilizers and planting new trees and plants, as well as casting growth magic and runes upon the land.

Environmental activism is especially controversial in the lands of Cenara, especially due to the centuries-old practice of dueling being a main aspect of stickman culture, but the recent mass extinction and gradual increase of individual destructiveness due to arcane growth makes the environment and ecosystems of Cenara much more fragile and unstable. The Fog and the Dead Lands, two arcane dead zones that have been growing in size due to stickman malpractice, are an ever looming threat to the life of their planet.

Many stickfigures, historians, and duelists fight against the restoration of the land in an argument to conserve their history. It is a common belief that the lawless dueling grounds are a sacred place to stickfigures, and many political battles have been fought and bought to keep the dueling grounds as they are.

However, as much as it is controversial within stickfigure communities, the activism to save their ecosystems is especially supported by the fauns and dragons that live in them. Fauns have been developing technology to reseed dead land with nutrients and bring life back to it, and dragonkind has been developing arcane advancements and magitechnology which speed up the growth of plant life even faster and more effectively than the magic of the Vishmian dragons that invented it.
