Childhood
Samba, originally named
Mille Vlanda, was born in the Dominion of Dusk to a father who didn't want her,
and a mother who was not prepared for her. Despite such a rough start in
life, Belote tried her absolute best to make sure Samba received the
best quality of life possible. The best years of her early life were
those before she reached the age of 10, as she managed to be able to
stay away from the absent Klaver and spend more time around her older
sibling.
For most of her younger years,
Samba was given room to do just about anything she wanted. She could
play games as long as she liked, she could eat whatever she wanted, she
got whatever toys she asked for just so she'd stay happy. At one point,
Samba asked for a puppy, which at first was fulfilled by Belote buying a
plush hound for her. She named this plush hound Mr. Pirate, and kept
the toy all the way until she moved out with her mother in adulthood.
Shortly
after getting the plush, however, Klaver brought home a real hound
puppy, which Samba grew deeply attached to very quickly. She'd play with
the puppy almost constantly, sleep with it, cuddle with it, and refuse
to take her eyes off of it. The puppy, who had been brought home as a
guardian animal, also grew deeply attached to Samba and would act
aggressively to anyone who tried to harm her.
As
Samba grew older and neared puberty, she began to gain weight as a
result of her metabolism slowing. Klaver viewed this as an opportunity
to gain control over his rowdy child. He began to insult her, refusing
to let her eat as much as she desired, and treating her much worse as a
threat of what others in the outside world would think of her.
At
the age of 12, Samba began developing a severe eating disorder. She
would eat less and less, and began losing a significant amount of
weight. Samba began spending a lot of her time on online forums to hide
from the stress, and first began using the name "Samba" as part of an
online handle for said forums. Going to these forums under the username
sambasalta, she would find websites dedicated to animals and pet owners
who wanted to talk to other pet owners and share their stories.
During
her stay on these forums, Samba began earning complimentary comments on
her photos of her pet, most of them referring to the animal as "cute",
"pretty", and having a beautiful coat. On one forum particularly, she
received unusual messages that requested for more photos of the hound
doing specific things. Photos of the hound from behind, her paws,
Samba's hand in the hound's mouth. Samba didn't know any better, so she
did these things, leading to more messages from unusual strangers.
As
time went on, the messages became worse and more explicit, leading to
an incident that caused the hound to bite Samba in self defense. Belote
discovered Samba with a bleeding arm, crying, hiding away from the
animal as the hound growled at her in return. Belote learned that Samba
had been touching the hound inappropriately as per the request of
several strangers online, and proceeded to ban Samba from all online
activities for several years.
Once Samba's
arm was sufficiently treated and had stopped bleeding, and the family
hound had been kept far away from Samba, Belote took it upon herself to
remove all traces of Samba from the internet and take down the website
full of predators using her power as a lawyer. The site owners ended up
being jailed, as well as the individuals who attempted grooming her
daughter. As a result of this incident, Samba developed severe traumas
related to hounds and could no longer touch them without panicking.
Around
this time, her older sibling Tiro was been kicked out of the house, and
the family hound that she had spent so long with was killed in the
scuffle with him. Soon after this incident, Samba's eating disorder
became significantly worse, to the point that she had to be hospitalized
due to health complications at 16.
Leaving Dusk
After
Samba was removed from the hospital, Malani - a friend of Belote -
managed to help the two gather evidence of Klaver's abuse, and they
formed a case against him that allowed Belote to divorce Klaver, take
custody of Samba, and leave the home. They moved to Alumanate and
successfully filed a restraining order against Klaver, free to live a
proper life without him hovering over them.
In
her new environment, Samba finally received proper education with
schooling that was designed for her mental processes. During her last
two years of high school, she under the approval of her mother would get
a legal name change to officially go by Samba Brindelle, as opposed to
her birth name. She also developed a rising interest in seamanship,
giving her an opportunity to explore the world outside the confines of
the city. She met several elderly sailors in her late teens, working as a
crewmate on their cargo ships to raise money and earn experience in the
field.
Alongside her final years of high
school, Samba was assigned a therapist to work through her eating
disorder and the hound-related traumas she experienced. This therapist
stuck with her until her mid twenties, in which they both decided Samba
had recovered enough to be able to continue working on her issues on her
own. Samba's immense weight gain during this time, as a result of her
healing from her eating disorder, did lead to some temporary health
issues; however, she continued doing proper exercise and eating
nutritiously, and grew healthier in no time.
Also
in her mid twenties, Samba became the captain of her own ferry, the
Sully Shuttle, due to gaining respect and earning a degree in marine
transportation. She quickly became one of the most trusted and
well-known ferrymen in eastern Alumanate, with her huge affinity for
water and knowledge of sailing and the sea. For anyone wanting to go
from west to east, Samba could halve the time it took to sail. She
especially found her niche in being able to traverse the dangerous
Boiling Range, which had few sailors willing to travel through it.
As
a side hobby, Samba also took up treasure diving. On days with no
passengers she would explore underwater shipwrecks and loot them for
treasures. Being able to hold her breath for so long gave her incredible
abilities to survive the dangerous waters. While she would most often
surface with technology and scraps of metal, occasionally Samba would
find valuables such as Ellyrites, precious metals, fossils, entity cores,
and on especially rare occasions, enchanted tools and weapons. With the help of said
valuables, Samba and her mother Belote managed to wriggle themselves
into financial stability.
Modern Day
Samba
has since made many friends across Cenara, especially so while traveling
across the ocean waters. The more people who take her ferry, the more
she gets to know, which helps enrich her highly social instincts as a
sorcerer.
One of her friends, Jigsaw,
joined her in 772 CE to explore the Boiling Range and search for
Mustora. Filokensia National Park provided them with the equipment
needed to explore the range safely, including a suit that protected
Jigsaw from the burning waters, in exchange for the promise that all
discoveries they made would be made public information. They spent
several months sailing into the Boiling Range, exploring shipwrecks
hidden deep within the burning archipelagos to learn more about the
history of the area. In doing so, not only did they find her, they also
woke Mustora from her long hibernation. This led to the disappearance of
the Boiling Range, the death of Mustora, and the birth of Kosenta all
within mere days from each other.
A few
months after returning home, Samba met a mandrake named Gabo who had
newly begun to work at the eastern docks with her. They quickly became
friends and spent a lot of time together, with Samba frequently spending
her break time talking to him and showing him things she'd found on her
treasure dives. As the months passed, their friendship grew closer,
gradually blossoming into stronger bonds. Samba grew fond of Gabo,
eventually asking him on a date, and after said date she wished to enter
a relationship with him. Since then, they have become even closer,
spending more time together and visiting each other at their homes.
In
774 CE, Samba visited The Smog Outlet when the route there was safe enough to
traverse by boat. In doing so, she discovered a small colony of
cat-like therocephalians she called selines. Despite their initially hostile
or defensive behavior, Samba chose to take the whole colony home to her
mother. She fully intended to keep all of them, but Belote refused to
let her keep any more than one. This seline was thus named Potato Chip
and became Samba's main companion on her lone trips across the sea for
treasure hunting.
In the year of 777 CE,
Samba went briefly stay with her extended family in Khartes Trichier.
Her family on her father's side remained a slightly sore spot for her,
which led to Samba being on edge during a visit to her grandmother
Madiao. After a tense, uncomfortable exchange, Samba made the rash
decision to seek out her father for retribution. Said retribution turned
out to be a violent outburst. Samba physically attacked her father, who
refused to fight back, brutalizing him and his body until he died by
her hands. She crushed his sorcerer's code in her hand, which killed him
almost instantly. After this outburst, she panicked and hurried home,
where she went to her mother for help and called upon her partner for
emotional support.
Samba remained on edge
for a while, gradually getting better, until her grandmother Madiao came
to her home to try and receive some emotional support for herself.
Samba viewed this act as a breach of her safety and privacy. She ran
away from home not long after Madiao arrived, going with her boyfriend
to Hondrus Grotto and stay in order to calm down and recover.
Samba
spent the greater amount of the visit learning to coexist with the
gelimos that lived there, foraging for her own food and helping them
with physical labor around their home. This experience was relaxing for
her, which allowed her to calm down and process the events that had
happened not long ago by keeping herself distracted and active.
