Fire slugs are strange beasts touched by elemental magic from the planes of fire. The large, slow moving slugs brew a pair of potent chemical concoctions in their bodies that result in a combustive explosion when the two meet. The slugs are capable of shooting this mixture at their prey in a stream of fire.
While dangerous, fire slugs are often sought out for 2 things: the chemicals in their bodies, and the strange slime they leave behind. The slimy trail is valuable in both culinary and practical contexts; in the kitchen, it is used as a natural thickener with minimal impact on flavor, and its naturally fire resistant properties have allowed bakers to use it to great effect in ovens. These properties are also useful for making fire resistant clothing, as well as in many alchemical applications.
The combustive chemicals brew in two separate locations in the body; a viscous grey liquid similar to paint in the back, and a slightly translucent orange liquid with a consistency not dissimilar to lava in two large sacs on their chests, generally obscured when the slug is at rest. When harvesting either of these, one must be careful not to mix them, at risk of becoming a fiery crater in the ground. One must also be careful not to greatly antagonize the slugs, as damage to the slug's delicate equillibrium can lead to a fantastic explosion. The orange liquid from the sacs is highly sought after for its uniquely spicy flavor.
