Caedalir is a major city in the Nightspell Moors, located in the north on the Sanar River. It is a peculiar city in that there are two distinct areas where the city exists, split miles apart by the river between them.
Description
Caedalir is an old but beautiful city. Spires inspired by elven architectural techniques give the city a tall and dimensional feeling, unlike many other settlements in the Moors. The stone spires of the city rise high into the sky, topped by blue roofs, claimed slightly by the creeping ivy that crawls all over the town. The buildings are packed closely together, but feel more cozy than claustrophobic. A large stone wall protects the city from invading forces, covered by vines and moss.
Structure
The east side is technically the older side, and was the original foundation of the city. As such, it is more populated then the west side. In contrast, the west side is more heavily guarded and defensible, as it was built in anticipation of an invasion by Betarian forces. Both sides contain heavily elven-inspired architecture, but the majority of the citizens are human. The city is guarded by large, grey, stone walls which can only be permeated through the large iron gates. The formidable gates close at nightfall in order to keep the citizenry safe from the roaming creatures and raiding parties that are common in the area. The city bans the creation of shanty towns outside its walls, in the interest of safety.
Districts
While most of the facilities of the city aren’t terribly organized and are scattered throughout the township, there are a few distinct districts. On the east side, there is the Tower District, the Harcell Division, the Moonheart District and the Market Quarter. On the west, there are the Trade Houses, the Suverine, and the Strikeward.
- Tower District
- Contains most of the governmental facilities of the city, run jointly by the Traders, Bankers, and Bookkeepers Guilds.
- Harcell Division
- A well-to-do district, filled with fine shops and a pleasant aroma
- Moonheart District
- A less clean but still very pretty district with housing built above the various shops below, creating a rustic feeling
- Market Quarter
- Centered in the middle of a major crossing, this district is occupied by a large day market where many people hawk their wares. Often full of elves conducting trade from ships coming down the river from Sanaris.
- Trade Houses
- A district mainly occupied by those dealing with the Traders Guild, as well as residential needs
- Suverine
- The majority of the west side; a mix of shops and peoples from all walks of life
- Strikeward
- In the west most areas of the city, where various smiths and crafters deal in warfare, supplying the soldiers of the Mercenaries Guild, as well as creating items for trade with the more war-prone Sanaris.
Leadership
While technically controlled by the Traders Guild, Caedalir appears to be less embroiled in the cut-throat capitalism that the rest of the Moors revel in. Poverty in the city is quite low, and the caring nature of the people establishes a warm atmosphere inside the city walls. However, this kindness does not seem to extend greatly to those beyond the walls.
Independent of the guilds, the city employs a mayor to guide the direction of the city, rather than leaving it up to the whims of the guild subsidiaries. The current mayor is Alue Caverdien.
There are a organizations operated by various guilds that help to keep the city safe. These are:
- The Savental
- Operated by the Bankers Guild
- Military captain: Captain Tulk
- The Fleethounds
- Operated by the Traders Guild
- Military captain: Captain Neylor
- The Bullfen
- Operated by the Mercenaries Guild
- Military captain: Captain Derren
Other information
The gates of the city are closed at night, and the Peas were forced to make camp outside the city walls when they arrived there late.
History
The Peas came to Caedalir during their journey to Sanaris to deliver the Sallow Stone. They arrived at night after the gates were closed, and decided to make camp outside the city walls. After fighting off a goblin raid, the group were accepted into the city as heroes, and given a small reward as compensation.
The mayor of Caedalir, Alue Caverdien, gave the Peas a written commendation regarding their feats of heroism. She warned that it might not be worth much outside of the Nightspell Moors, but she was more than happy to endorse the group. Additionally, the helped the group restock their rations and gave them 1000 gold from the city bank.
The Peas left Caedalir in good standing with the city.
