The Nine Weapons

The Nine Legendary Weapons are not merely artifacts of war. They are symbols, manifestations of ideology forged during the apocalyptic conflict known as the Divine Contention, wherein mortal champions—called the Divine Contenders—battled for the soul of a shattered world. Each weapon corresponds to one of the nine alignments of mortal philosophy, from Lawful Good to Chaotic Evil, and each was said to choose a bearer whose soul resonated with that aspect of existence.

These weapons were not created. They were revealed—discovered by fate or destiny during the Contention, forged from what the world needed most: clarity, conviction, and, above all, choice.

The origin of the Nine remains hotly debated. Some scholars believe they are fragments of the forgotten pantheon destroyed during the Age Before, the last lingering echoes of divine emotion crystallized into form. Others argue they are the collective will of mortal souls, shaped into weaponry by the pressure of the collapsing Realms.

What is certain is this: the weapons sought their wielders, not the other way around.

And when they found them, history was made.

The Nine were central to the Divine Contention, an era-defining conflict between mortals infused with ideological power. The Divine Contenders, each wielding one of the Nine, sought to halt the rise of Adran Amastica, the first Blackguard—a creature of perfect Lawful Evil balance who sought to impose eternal domination on a world already cracking.

Most of the Contenders died. One, Tidus, fell to corruption and joined Adran, wielding Blacktorrent to slaughter his former comrades. Only one survived: Vincent the Survivor, who briefly wielded Redemption after the death of its bearer, and who left behind the sole surviving account of the Contention.

The battle ended in ruin. The Nine were scattered. Some lost. Some broken. Some… waiting.

As of the Contemporary Era, several weapons have resurfaced:

• Fluxbrand is wielded by Jacob, a member of the Hype Squad, and was instrumental in defeating Therlin Heskan.
  
• Nullbrand's power was destroyed along with Therlin’s transformed form, though rumors persist that a sliver remains deep beneath the vaults of Golorr.
  
• Blacktorrent was never recovered after Tidus’ fall. Its last known location was the charred wastes near the Spine of the World.

The rest remain lost to time, sealed in vaults, buried in forgotten tombs, or awaiting new voices to speak their names.

The Nine are not just items—they are alignment incarnate. To wield one is to resonate with its purpose. Many who tried to claim one were consumed or driven mad. Only the worthy—or the doomed—could bear their weight.

The Nine were not balanced by accident. Each bore a truth the others refused to see. That they ended in blood is unsurprising. Ideology, when shaped into steel, cannot help but cut. Yet even now I wonder: did the weapons reflect their wielders, or did the wielders become what the weapons required?

And if they return... who shall they choose next?
