There are many mysteries surrounding the Drakons, a deadly beast of the sea, but an important part of the economy of New Dawn. Known by others as Sea Drakes, Scythed Horrors of the Deep, and other things, there are a great many questions that surround such beasts.
The key question I wish to posit in these writings, are they really dragons?
While they have been known of since before the founding of New Dawn, and have been called such, is it really fair to put them on the same level of creatures that are so much more graceful, intelligent, and powerful? Allow me to put forth my argument thusly.
Intelligence
One thing that can be said for certain, is that their intellect is FAR outstripped by even the youngest of dragons. I have found in my research, no conclusive proof of the beasts managing to communicate, in any way that could be called meaningful, with other intelligent beings. Their sheer cantankerous nature and desire to rip apart any ship that comes too nearby, makes even attempts to read the thoughts of such creatures moot. There are some claims from the tribal Klimákthropoi (WIP) that their kin with closer bonds to the natural world, know ways to communicate with these Sea Creatures, and calm their raging nature, but I have as of yet found validity to such claims.
Morphology
The description of a Drakon, is where many of its hallmarks as a ‘dragon’ come from. The Large, reptilian, scaled form. Its ‘wing-like’ fins that grace it’s back, and the strange icey breath it can expel.
However these are only surface descriptions. Thekret, mad genius he was, managed to breed a subspecies of his The’vran that walked on four limbs, had a tough scaly hide, could breathe small gouts of a Noxious poison, and even fly short distances on its small wings. But do we claim these as Dragons? NAY! These creatures we keep as livestock, pets, and guard animals we consider not more different than other livestock like Chicken or Sheep.
I myself am of the mind that they are more suited to be considered beasts of the sea, in a similar line to the great undulating Sea Serpents that wander the far deeper waters dozens and more miles away from any landform. Yet still some say nay. ‘Sea Serpents have no limbs like scythes! Sea Serpents have no Winglike protrusions!’ these folk argue. I argue in turn, ‘Does a Dragon have limbs like Scythes? Do Dragons lack hind limbs?’
