The groups are based around a narrative arch. There is a major thing that everyone is working around, but personal character goals are just as important. You'll likely be working on your own personal character goals that may or may not help the group. Being evil in a group of good characters can be a lot of fun!
With that being said were using groups for several reasons.
* The dungeon masters can focus around a larger narrative arch
* The players will always have a character they can play a game with.
* There is incentive to make the character fit the arch thereby having cohesion with the other characters.
* Bonds aren't made with just RP in text channels. The biggest factor in building bonds is through adversity.
* You're joining a group of players, not a server of loosely bound players. You're not part of the group if you're not playing with them.
