I 2830 - III 370
Succeeded by | Melaern (as King in Exile) |
"Of the Three Elvish Kings he was the most charismatic, most powerful, and most energetic. He was a renowned warrior, and great leader of soldiers, and a lover of the song and verse. His hair was black as night and his eyes shone a bright blue as if they contained the midday sky itself.'
Felaern, also called Felaern the Fallen, was the first and only King of Ice and Snow, ruling over Lysbar until its destruction by the Dark Lord Malagazh, during which he was slain. He was one of the originators and leaders of the Exile of the Elves.
Felaern brought his host deep into the northern tundra of El-Bayir to keep them removed from the affairs of the rest of the world and so they could live in peace. Shortly before setting out, he and his followers received a vision from Beld of a white forest. They knew from the vision that this was to be their destination should they wish to survive and thrive in the cold wastes of the great north. They marched for decades through blizzard and snow, and many perished from the cold. The sky was lit by light weaved by Zot, creating a shining path towards the predestined spot. Upon arriving, it is said that Felaern and his host sang a great song which led the city to rise out of the ground, magically carved out of ice and stone. The Kingdom of Lysbar prospered, largely escaping the ruin of the Second Age. They assisted Beld during the War, with the King and his husband fighting alongside the realm they had left so long ago.
Felaern met and fell in love with an Elven knight named Merlodion before the Exile, and upon Felaern's coronation, Merlodion became Prince Merlodion. It was said the the marriage of Felaern and Merlodion was attended by Vessia Herself, so true was their love.
Besides his rulership and power as a warrior, Felaern was a lover of music and was a master of the harp and lute. He composed many ancient and still-remembered songs, including several love ballads to Merlodion.
He led his realm in prosperity and happiness for thousands of years until his people were beset by the Dark Lord Malagazh. The Dark Lord killed Felaern's husband, leading the King to erupt into a fiery blind rage. The end of such a loving union before its natural conclusion so angered Vessia, that she bestowed on Felaern the Sword of the Widower, an incredibly powerful blade. He brought forward an expedition to face the Dark Lord and destroy him. He met the Dark Lord in the field of battle, and in a pitched battle, the Dark Lord won a costly victory, his armies overrunning the destroying the Elvish Realm of Lysbar.
Felaern swore a dark oath upon the death of his husband that he would not die until Malagazh had been defeated. He made a desperate pact with Buzdai, who gave him his wish, but consigned him to the tomb of his husband, the Crypt of the Widower, doomed to stand eternal vigilance until his husband was avenged. Additionally, Buzdai cursed the king with madness, leaving him in a waking nightmare for thousands of years. His soul is bonded with the Dark Lord, and only through his death may Felaern finally join his husband in the afterlife.
Felaern and Merlodion had seven children, all of whom (except Melaern, the youngest who was born just a year before the Fall of Lysbar) died in the Fall of Lysbar.
