Amidst the ruins of the Long Men is the Labryinth. My Samari guides Som and Kanika refused to enter the maze, and they said that to even look upon it was to be cursed. So I approached alone. When I told them of my intentions, they performed for me funeral rites and sent me on my merry way. The Labyrinth is an eerie and unsettling place. Too smooth, too pristine, too old, too quiet, too everything. We used to think that the Long Men built it, but when we deciphered their language we learned that they were as confused and scared of it as we are. I would posit that it is a Mannic construction, but it lacks their typical grandeur and flair for the dramatic. If Deshen's kingdom built this, where are the statues of brass, bronze, and gold? Or the elaborate carvings and paintings? Or the prayers to the Star King, to Beld, and to the other Elohim? For this reason, I do not believe it was the Kingdom of the First Man who built this maze. In that case, what is this maze? Who built it? And what happened to them?
- excerpt from Wondrous Sights
Deep in the icy wastes of Hatmagal is the Southern Labyrinth, a gargantuan maze constructed of ice and magic. The origin of the labyrinth is unknown, and no writing or identifying marks have been found on it, simply smooth unmelting ice. South of the Labyrinth are the ruins of the Tall Men, who were originally thought to have been the builders of the structure. However, their records indicate that the Labyrinth predated their civilization.
Estimates in age for the Southern Labyrinth range from the Second Age to Prehistory itself. Scholars theorize a connection between the Southern Labyrinth and a similarly mysterious labyrinth on the island of World's Edge, however the extreme distance and difference in construction materials lead many scholars to question this connection.
