V 5 - V 18

Koren I Khainohk was the first King of Gem and Stone. A leal vassal of Datula the Conqueror, Koren was already an old man and riddled with gout when the Conquest of Mernel began, and so he did not command any levies on the field of battle. After House Merryaxe was deposed, Pelegon I raised Koren to kingship, though scholars dispute exactly why he did this. House Khainohk was not the most distinguished of the Mernelian houses, House Azjham and House Deepheart had both been kings before. Nor had Koren sided with Pelegon I like Lysos V Adrastos, he had sent levies to fight the conqueror and lost two daughters and a granddaughter on the field of battle. As far as historical evidence goes, Koren did not conspire to betray his monarch either. Some scholars suspect it may have been Koren's known wisdom, just nature, and the fact that he hadn't personally taken up arms against Pelegon which led him to be selected as King of Gem and Stone.
