Gilfwydd’s Landing

In contrast to its southern terminus at the imposing gatehouse of Gardiren’s Medrik Bridge, the northern end of Noron’s Way is a muddy patch of ground in the marshes on the south bank of the Anoth River. Nonetheless, Gilfwydd’s Landing is a sign the arduous trek from Kaldor is nearly over.

Gilfwydd’s Landing is not a village and the fisherfolk who live here have few services to welcome wayfarers. The fishermen and their families, all part of Clan Congaul, live in a cluster of huts raised on stilts above the marshy riverbank. The Congauls fish the Anoth and its marshes for subsistence and to trade for coin or other goods in the market at Shese. The Jarin clan pays a tribute of one fish in ten to Clan Haidaar. Much of the clan’s coin comes from ferrying travelers and their goods across the river and from “protecting” any carts they leave behind while doing business in the towns.

With no bridge spanning the Anoth, the crossing must be made by boat, a service the Congauls are happy to provide. The fishermen are out on the water from the early hours of morning until late in the day and can usually be flagged down to provide passage. They are much less willing to carry passengers across the river at night or during inclement weather but can sometimes be convinced by a sizeable purse.

Shese is approximately one league across the south channel of the Anoth. The town is easily visible from the trailhead on a clear day but is often obscured by dense fog or rain. The trip across is against the current and usually takes less than an hour on a calm day, but can be significantly more if the current and winds are unfavorable.

Lorkin, on the far side of the river, is more than two leagues as the crow flies. By order of Valhakar Saanfrin Haidaar, the Congauls must take all passengers to Shese and not directly to Lorkin. Hylin of Twael runs a ferry between Lorkin and Vorten on the north side of Shenesel Island but will occasionally bring passengers to Gilfwydd’s Landing. Hylin and his clan are under the protection of the lord of Lorkin and thus not bound by the same restrictions as the Congauls. Much to Fergian’s annoyance, Hylin can pick up passengers, livestock, and cargo at the Landing and take them directly to Lorkin. Fergian refuses to let Hylin use the clan’s dock.
