Slaves (Thralls in Ivinia)

Slavery on Ivinia is common and widespread. Slaves are called thralls by Ivinians. On Hârn slavery is prevalent only in Rethem, the Thardic Republic, and in Orbaal, where they are (also) called thralls. Hârnic slavers are members of the Mercantylers’ Guild. In Ivinia thralls are part of a clan.

The following are typical prices for slaves on Hârn:
Laborer/thrall 240–480d
Pleasure slave 300–600d
Gladiator, etc. 480–960d

Exceptional slaves command exceptional prices. Lobrad, a Golothan gladiator with a score of wins in the Pamesani, was sold in 715 to a Thardic Senator for more than 9,600d; since then, he has won nearly twice that in wagers for his master.

Back to Ivinia. The Ivinian term for a slave is thrall. They are usually war captives or their descendants, either individuals or small families. Large, extended thrall clans exist but are not
common. Most thralls are owned by rural greatclans. Some thralls become trusted and honored persons (a "bryte" in Ivinian), even to the extent of bearing arms and fighting at their master’s side. There is very little trade in thralls. Wergild ranges from 360d to 720d, depending on their skills. See also Ättledning.
