Gekko's Sword

Weapon (shortsword), uncommon (requires attunement)

You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this gaudy bejeweled magic weapon.

Curse. This sword is cursed and possessed by a vengeful spirit named Gekko. Becoming attuned to it extends the curse to you. As long as you remain cursed, you are unwilling to part with the sword, keeping it on your person at all times. While attuned to this weapon, you have disadvantage on attack rolls made with weapons other than this one.

In addition, while the sword is on your person, Gekko constantly whispers into your mind: "Greed, for lack of a better word, is Good." "Don’t run when you lose, don’t whine when it hurts. No one likes a crying baby.” “It’s not always the most popular person who gets the job done.” "Greed is right, greed works.” “What’s worth doing is worth doing for money.” “It’s not a question of enough, pal. It’s a zero-sum game, somebody wins, somebody loses. Money itself isn’t lost or made, it’s simply transferred from one perception to another.” “Money never sleeps, pal." "A fool and his money are lucky enough to get together in the first place.”

At the conclusion of any Long Rest you must attempt a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, you "feed the greed" and feel compelled to acquire more wealth, possessions, and power, by any means. After every tenth time you feed the greed you must succeed on a DC 15 saving throw or your alignment will shift one position toward Chaotic Evil - towards Evil first, and then towards Chaos.

You can break the curse in the usual ways. Alternatively, casting banishment on the sword forces Gekko to leave it. The sword then becomes a +1 weapon with no other properties.

Proficiency with a shortsword allows you to add your proficiency bonus to the attack roll for any attack you make with it.

Notes: Bonus: Magic, Damage, Combat, Cursed, Finesse, Light
