Hellish Maulers

Hellish Maulers

The Hellish Maulers are a small but formidable street gang operating in the poorest neighborhoods of Lygos, areas often overlooked by the city’s nobility and left neglected by the City Watch. Comprised primarily of Tieflings and Dragonborn, the Maulers walk a thin line between protectors and predators, depending on the needs of their survival and ambitions.

Operations and Tactics

The Hellish Maulers’ activities revolve around maintaining control of their territory, keeping out larger gangs and predatory guilds that prey on the vulnerable residents of the slums. They operate like a tightly knit militia, enforcing their own brand of order where the City Watch hesitates to tread. However, their methods are anything but conventional.

  • Surprise and Ambush: The Maulers rarely engage in outright battles, preferring to ambush and overwhelm their targets with speed and ferocity. They know the twisting alleys, rooftops, and hidden passages of the slums better than anyone, using this knowledge to outmaneuver their enemies.

  • Protection Rackets: The Maulers extort "protection fees" from local businesses and residents, but they also provide genuine protection in return, chasing off dangerous criminals and handling disputes. For some, they are a necessary evil; for others, they are a lifeline in a lawless part of the city.

  • Smuggling and Theft: While they avoid large-scale criminal enterprises to stay under the city’s radar, the Maulers dabble in petty theft and small-scale smuggling to fund their operations. They also run gambling dens and underground fight rings.

Leadership

The gang’s fiery leader, Nefertiti Swiftbane, is a striking white-skinned tiefling with an aura of command and a temper as fierce as her infernal heritage. Her horns curve like a ram’s, and her golden eyes burn with determination. Nefertiti grew up in the slums herself, and her rise to power came through cunning and calculated ruthlessness.

  • Nefertiti’s Philosophy: She sees the Maulers as more than just a gang—they are a force of survival and self-determination for those abandoned by the city. While her methods are harsh, she genuinely believes in protecting her people. However, her growing ambitions hint at a desire to expand the Maulers’ influence and power.

  • Her Reputation: Nefertiti is respected, feared, and admired in equal measure. She is a skilled tactician, capable of turning even the smallest advantage into a decisive victory. Her fiery temper is legendary, but so is her loyalty to her gang and the people under her protection.

Members and Hierarchy

The Hellish Maulers operate as a close-knit family, with Nefertiti at the top and a few trusted lieutenants beneath her.

1. Rurik “Ironfist” Embermaw (Red Dragonborn Thug)
A hulking red dragonborn with scarred knuckles and a sneer full of jagged teeth. Rurik was once a pugilist who fought in illegal pits, and he still wears oversized iron rings on each finger—his signature calling card, leaving bloody, ring-shaped imprints on anyone he smashes. Loud, violent, and quick to anger, he relishes being the gang’s muscle.

2. Veyra Lashbane (Purple Tiefling Forger)
A striking tiefling woman with smooth violet skin, curled horns, and a whip-like tail that flicks when she’s annoyed. Veyra is the gang’s forger and detail worker, specializing in counterfeit papers, seals, and fine mechanical trickery. Polished and professional on the surface, she has a ruthless streak, and her work is always meticulous.

3. Scuzzy (Kobold Pickpocket)
A scrawny, grime-covered kobold with missing teeth and wide, darting eyes. More mascot than true enforcer, Scuzzy tags along with the gang for scraps and protection. Despite his pathetic appearance, he has fast fingers and a knack for slipping valuables from pockets unnoticed. The Maulers find him amusing and useful, though they never take him seriously.

4. Darrin “Knives” Hallow (Human Street Fighter)
One of the rare humans among the Maulers, Darrin is a wiry, scarred man who always has a long knife in each hand. He excels at dirty, close-quarter fighting—biting, kicking, gouging—and has no qualms about fighting unfair. His reputation is that of a street brawler who enjoys making people bleed.

5. Scholarix Vorn (Orange Tiefling Safecracker)
A studious-looking tiefling with burnt-orange skin, round spectacles, and neatly kept robes that make him look more like a professor than a criminal. Scholarix is a master of locks, traps, and safes, able to crack even the most complicated mechanisms. He speaks with a refined, measured tone, making him stand out among his rougher peers.

6. Brukk “The Wall” Stonehide (Goliath Bruiser)
A towering goliath with dull eyes and a lumbering gait, Brukk carries a massive iron-shod club that he affectionately calls “Smiler.” Not the brightest mind in the gang, but loyal to a fault, Brukk follows orders without question. When unleashed, he smashes through walls and foes alike, leaving chaos in his wake.

  • The Maulers: The rank-and-file members are a mix of tieflings and dragonborn, united by their outcast status and their loyalty to Nefertiti. Many are young and desperate, drawn to the gang as a means of survival.

Territory

The Maulers control a small section of the Plank, marked by crude graffiti of a flaming maul—a symbol of their gang. This area is rough and dangerous but significantly safer than surrounding neighborhoods, thanks to the Maulers’ efforts. They are fiercely territorial, and outsiders entering their domain are closely watched.

Ambitions and Challenges

The Hellish Maulers have managed to stay under the radar of the city’s authorities by keeping their operations small and focused. However, as Nefertiti’s ambitions grow, so too does the gang’s risk of drawing unwanted attention.

  • Expansion Plans: Nefertiti envisions expanding the Maulers’ reach into nearby neighborhoods, turning them into a force that cannot be ignored by the city. This includes recruiting more members and diversifying their operations.

  • Threats: The gang faces threats from larger criminal organizations, rival gangs, and even the City Watch, which may be forced to act if the Maulers become too bold.

Reputation in Lygos

For the residents of the slums, the Hellish Maulers are both protectors and extortionists, their presence a double-edged sword. To the rest of Lygos, they are little more than a nuisance for now—troublesome but too small to warrant direct action. However, whispers of their growing power and Nefertiti’s fiery leadership suggest they may soon become a force to be reckoned with in the city’s underworld.
