Oghma Academy

The Oghma Academy is a prestigious institution dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, creativity, and intellectual growth. Situated in the heart of the city, the academy is a state-sponsored college that stands as a symbol of Lygos' commitment to enlightenment and progress. Its patron deity is Oghma, the god of knowledge, inspiration, and invention, whose influence permeates every aspect of the academy's operation and design.

Architecture

The academy’s architecture is a harmonious blend of functionality and grandeur. Built from pale limestone and accented with golden marble, its sprawling campus is designed to inspire curiosity and awe. The central building is a grand, rectangular structure crowned with a large dome engraved with the Symbol of Oghma: an open book. Four tall spires rise from each corner of the main building, representing the four pillars of knowledge: wisdom, creativity, logic, and innovation.

Wide steps lead to a set of arched double doors carved with images of scholars, scribes, and inventors. Above the entrance is an inscription inlaid with gold:
"Through knowledge, we illuminate the world."

Gardens filled with vibrant flowers, exotic plants, and reflective pools surround the academy, offering serene spaces for contemplation and discussion.

Facilities

The academy’s campus is a sprawling network of interconnected buildings and courtyards, each serving a specific purpose:

  • The Hall of Enlightenment: The main lecture hall, capable of holding hundreds of students, is adorned with frescoes depicting the great philosophers and inventors of history. It features an enchanted skylight that adjusts to provide perfect lighting for study and lectures.

  • The Scriptorium: A vast library that houses thousands of tomes, scrolls, and artifacts. This sacred space is dedicated to Oghma and includes a central shrine where scholars can offer prayers for inspiration. The shelves are enchanted to organize themselves, and the library staff includes several sentient constructs.

  • The Workshop of Wonders: A state-of-the-art laboratory and workshop for inventors and artificers. Here, students can experiment with alchemy, engineering, and magical inventions under the supervision of expert instructors.

  • The Observatory: A tall tower equipped with enchanted telescopes and star charts, allowing students and scholars to study the heavens and celestial phenomena.

  • The Debate Forum: An open-air amphitheater where students engage in debates, present their findings, and challenge each other’s ideas. It is a lively space where intellectual discourse thrives.

  • The Garden of Inspiration: A lush courtyard filled with rare plants and statues dedicated to Oghma’s aspects. The garden is designed for quiet reflection and is a popular place for poets and artists.

The Faculty and Students

The Oghma Academy is staffed by some of the brightest minds in the realm—scholars, mages, inventors, and artists who dedicate their lives to teaching and discovery. Professors are often specialists in their fields, ranging from ancient history and magical theory to engineering and philosophy.

The students are equally diverse, drawn from the wealthy elite of Lygos as well as talented individuals sponsored by the state for their exceptional promise. The academy is a meritocracy at its core, rewarding brilliance and hard work above all else.

Role in Lygos

The academy plays a crucial role in shaping the future of Lygos. It produces scholars, politicians, inventors, and adventurers who leave its halls equipped to contribute to the city’s prosperity and progress. It also serves as a hub of innovation, where ideas and inventions are refined and shared with the broader community.

The Academy maintains strong ties to the Temple of Oghma, often collaborating on projects that push the boundaries of knowledge and understanding. During festivals dedicated to Oghma, the academy opens its doors to the public, hosting exhibitions, lectures, and competitions to celebrate the god’s influence.

Reputation

Known throughout the region as a center of learning and innovation, the Oghma Academy attracts visitors and scholars from distant lands. Its commitment to the ideals of Oghma has made it a beacon for those who seek enlightenment and a vital part of Lygos' identity as a hub of culture and intellect.

Academy NPCs

1. Tilla Quillspark (Gnome Female Acolyte)

A cheerful, fast-talking gnome with a mass of curly brown hair barely tamed under her acolyte’s hood. She leads tours for potential students, peppering her explanations with trivia and footnotes, often wandering off-topic to share obscure facts. She carries an overstuffed satchel of scrolls, which she waves about dramatically as she lectures.

2. Seryth Frostsquall (White Dragonborn Male)

A thin, bespectacled dragonborn with pale scales that glisten like frost. At the moment, he is hyperventilating in a corridor before an exam, mumbling formulas and clutching a quill so tightly it’s splintering. His spectacles keep sliding off his snout, which only makes him panic more. He is known among peers for his brilliance—when he can keep his nerves in check.

3. Cindrel Tenderfoot (Halfling Female Student)

A bright-eyed halfling girl with an inkwell always in hand and parchment spilling from her bag. She approaches the players excitedly, quill at the ready, begging to interview them for her thesis: “Tourism in Lygos: Opportunity or Exploitation?” She asks rapid-fire questions and interrupts herself to jot notes furiously.

4. Professor Ysabet Grayvine (Elderly Human Female)

A frail-looking but razor-sharp human woman with iron-gray hair pulled into a bun so tight it seems to pull her whole face upward. She is in mid-argument about the “true origins of Netherese spellcraft,” her voice crisp and cutting.

5. Professor Thalanor Starbough (Elderly Male Elf)

A stately elf in his twilight centuries, robes draped elegantly. He counters Ysabet with long-winded retorts on “the influence of Sarrukh proto-magic.” The two are notorious for their endless debates—sometimes so obscure even other professors stop listening.

6. Dorga Ironlace (Dwarf Female Acolyte of Gond)

A broad-shouldered dwarf woman with singed gloves, soot-smudged cheeks, and a bundle of parchment petitions under her arm. She is canvassing students and faculty for signatures to open a Crafter’s Wing at the academy, insisting that “not every bright mind needs to be buried in books—some of us need anvils and gears!”

7. Veyra Ashmark (Hobgoblin Female Student)

A tall, athletic hobgoblin girl with her textbooks forgotten in the grass. She leans against the tree trunk, one arm draped lazily around her study partner’s shoulders. Her smirk leaves no doubt she’s more interested in him than in her books.

8. Tomas Drell (Human Male Student)

A lanky young man with tousled brown hair and ink-stained fingers. His notes lie abandoned in his lap as he leans eagerly toward Veyra. They claim to be “studying under the tree,” but their whispering and shy laughter make it obvious they are mostly studying each other.

9. Serene Willowmark (Half-Elf Female Alchemist)

A frazzled half-elf woman in a soot-stained robe bursts from one of the alchemy labs, smoke billowing behind her. She waves her arm wildly, yelping for help as a leather glove she accidentally enchanted clings stubbornly to her hand, squeezing tighter with every affectionate “hug.” Her long auburn hair is singed at the ends, and her spectacles are askew, but between frantic gasps she still shouts, “It’s not dangerous—it’s just too loving!”
