Hogbrew's Enchantments

On the surface, Hogbrew’s Enchantments looks like any other respectable curio shop in the Market District: brightly lit, immaculately clean, and neatly arranged with polished counters and well-labeled shelves of charms, trinkets, and spellcasting supplies. The air carries the faint scent of lavender and parchment, and the whole place hums with the orderly dignity of a professional establishment.

But anyone who lingers quickly notices something… odd. A quill scribbles a note on its own, a candlestick slides three inches to the left when no one is looking, or a chair swivels just as a customer goes to sit down. Sometimes a necklace glows faintly, only to go dark when it’s picked up, or a book changes shelves the moment someone’s back is turned. In truth, Larissa Hogbrew has enchanted half the shop with Animate Objects—not out of necessity, but for her own amusement and to show off her talents.

Larissa herself, a sharp-eyed woman with a perfectly composed smile, never acknowledges the strangeness. She will calmly insist that everything is quite ordinary, all while a broom sweeps past on its own or a teacup scuttles across the counter like a spider. She relishes watching new customers doubt their own senses, and regulars have learned that part of the shop’s charm is enduring (or outsmarting) its tricks.

Though eccentric, Larissa is a master of her craft. Her enchantments are clever, reliable, and always delivered with an artistic flair. Adventurers seeking magical trinkets, spell-scrolls, or unique charms often leave with more than they bargained for—sometimes literally, as items have a habit of hopping into customers’ bags when Larissa isn’t paying attention.

In Lygos, Hogbrew’s Enchantments has become as much an attraction as a store: part marketplace, part performance, and part test of nerve, where even the furniture might be laughing at you.

Mischievous Shop Effects (d8)

1.     The Wandering Chair – A wooden chair scoots away just as a customer goes to sit down. If pursued, it freezes in place as if nothing happened.

2.     The Overeager Broom – A broom suddenly sweeps directly across someone’s feet, nearly tripping them, before leaning innocently against the wall.

3.     The Jittery Teacup – A porcelain cup rattles on the counter before hopping like a frog into someone’s hand. It’s empty, unless Larissa chuckles and “fills” it with tea via prestidigitation.

4.     The Chiming Clock – A small mantle clock chimes thirteen times, no matter the hour. When checked again, it ticks perfectly normally.

5.     The Leaping Lute – A lute on the wall strums itself softly when no one looks directly at it, playing a pleasant tune. When someone stares, it hangs silent.

6.     The Sneaky Candle – A lit candle flickers out suddenly, only to reignite a moment later across the room. The wick is never shorter.

7.     The Playful Book – A book of “Beginner’s Enchantments” hops off the shelf, lands at a customer’s feet, and falls open to a blank page. If ignored, it sulks and hops back.

8.     The Jewelry Prank – A necklace glows faintly, almost beckoning. If picked up, it makes the wearer’s voice echo dramatically for 1 minute before going inert.
