Royal Observatory

Location: On the highest terrace of the Crescent District, overlooking the Whitespray Strait Strait. From below, its domed roof gleams like a silver eye gazing toward the heavens.

Overview

The Royal Observatory of Lygos is both a monument to the city’s devotion to Selûne and a symbol of its scientific ambition. Built of polished marble and fitted with enormous crystal lenses, the observatory’s great dome houses the largest telescope in the known realms — a structure of brass gears and enchanted mirrors capable of tracking celestial bodies across both sky and sea.

By day, scholars of House Greystar and the University of the Sacred Flame use it to chart tides, eclipses, and portents. By night, the air fills with the scent of oil and ozone as the telescope whirs to life, its lens rotating like a mechanical eye that peers deep into the black beyond the stars.

The people of Lygos call it the Eye of Selûne, though few realize just how far that “eye” truly sees.

Architecture

·        The Dome: A massive silvered hemisphere of enchanted steel that can open along hidden seams to reveal the heavens. The telescope is mounted on a rotating brass platform covered in runes of focus and clarity.

·        The Chart Hall: Lined with murals of constellations, phases of the moon, and depictions of the three aspects of Selûne. Scholars gather here to compare celestial maps and interpret omens.

·        The Lunar Vault: A sealed chamber beneath the observatory said to hold meteorite fragments and relics that fell from the stars — some humming faintly with alien energy.

·        The Courtyard of Whispers: Serves as both garden and gallery, where philosophers, nobles, and nightwatchers gather to discuss discoveries and drink spiced wine under the stars.

Chief Astrologer: Professor Thaelion Voss

Male Tiefling (purple skin, white goatee, ram-like horns curving back over his temples)

Appearance: Dressed in layered indigo robes trimmed with silver thread, Thaelion’s eyes shimmer faintly like amethyst glass when reflecting starlight. His voice is soft, scholarly, and often carries the cadence of someone thinking several thoughts at once.

Personality: Patient, philosophical, and deeply curious. Thaelion possesses a quiet humor and a habit of answering questions with more questions. He treats the stars not as distant objects, but as living witnesses to creation.

Quote:
“The heavens are not cold. They are merely waiting for someone brave enough to visit.”

Abilities & Knowledge:

·        Knows of Starjamming ships, their nature, and their ability to traverse the Astral Sea.

·        Has a few fragments of wildspace charts locked in the Lunar Vault, remnants of an ancient spelljamming crew that once visited Lygos.

·        Understands basic planar navigation, magical gravity, and how spelljammers harness energy to travel.

·        Can identify alien materials or extraplanar artifacts that players might recover.

Hook for DMs:
Thaelion can serve as a gateway NPC for Spelljammer campaigns — offering knowledge, guidance, or a contact who can connect the party to a ship’s captain, an astral guild, or a hidden launch platform beneath the city.

Rumors and Secrets

·        Some say the telescope has focused on something watching back — an enormous eye deep in the void.

·        The Royal Observatory’s funding quietly comes from House Greystar, who may have their own agenda for studying the heavens.

·        Thaelion’s research assistants whisper that he occasionally vanishes for days at a time, returning with star dust on his robes and wild ideas about walking between worlds.

·        Beneath the Lunar Vault is a hidden hangar large enough to house a small spelljamming skiff, but no one has seen it in centuries… except perhaps Thaelion himself.

Adventure Hooks

1.     The Star That Fell: A meteor crashes near Lygos. Thaelion hires the party to recover it before scavengers or cultists reach it first.

2.     Echoes from the Void: Thaelion detects an impossible signal from beyond the moon — the psychic distress call of a stranded spelljammer.

3.     The Observatory Heist: The Lunar Vault is breached, and a fragment of an Astral Crystal is stolen. The thieves may be cultists, star pirates, or agents from another world.

4.     Charting Wildspace: Thaelion invites the PCs to assist in completing a map of the stars — which turns out to be a ritual to open a stable Astral Gate.

Summary:
The Royal Observatory of Lygos stands as a bridge between the terrestrial and the cosmic — a beacon of light and knowledge gazing into endless darkness. For most, it is a place of wonder and philosophy. For a few, it is the first step toward the stars.
