Royal Crypts

Set on a rise overlooking the Royal Quarter, the Royal Crypts of Lygos are a somber testament to the city’s power and tradition. Only the wealthiest nobles and the most influential citizens are permitted to be interred here, their resting places guarded as fiercely in death as they were in life.

The crypt grounds are laid out like a sacred garden. Marble paths wind between manicured lawns and carefully tended trees, with every grave marked by a polished stone slab or finely carved statue. Servants of the crown maintain the grounds daily, ensuring that not a single weed mars the perfection of the cemetery.

At the heart of the crypts stand three vast mausoleums, each dedicated to one of the founding families of Lygos: the Evermores, the Proudcoats, and the Jerichos. These monumental structures gleam with artistry and wealth: domes of white marble, pillars inlaid with gold and silver, and doors inscribed with prayers to Selûne and the moon’s light. Within, elaborate tombs house generations of rulers, matriarchs, and champions of each line.

The entire site is enclosed by a wrought golden fence, its crescent moon finials catching the light of both sun and stars. Access is strictly limited—an honor guard of elite soldiers patrols the perimeter, allowing entry only to family members and the closest confidants of the deceased. For outsiders, the crypts are a place of reverence and quiet awe, visible from afar but rarely entered.

The Royal Crypts are more than a burial ground—they are a reminder of the bond between the founding families, and a stark symbol of their enduring dominance over the city. Whispers say the dead rest uneasily here, stirred by secrets interred with them, but none dare trespass under the vigilant gaze of the guards.

Daytime Visitors

1. Lady Seralyth of the Weeping Vale

Race: Elf

Role: Mourning Widow

Appearance: Slender and draped in flowing black silk, a lace veil covers her face, but her piercing violet eyes are visible beneath. She leaves a single black rose on each of five different graves—each bearing the name of a different deceased husband.

Personality: Soft-spoken, enigmatic, almost spectral in her movements

Rumors:

Some say she is a cursed widow.

Others claim she’s centuries old and each husband died under strange or suspicious circumstances.

One of the crypt guards insists he saw her leave without walking—she simply vanished.

Quote:

“I do not mourn the men I buried... only the promises they broke.”

Hook: PCs may be asked to investigate the odd pattern of deaths, or she may approach them with a request involving her next intended spouse…

2. The Greenwhistle Family

Race: Halflings

Role: Mourning (and picnicking) Visitors

Appearance: A plump halfling couple with three boisterous children in tow. They’ve brought fresh bread, cheese, and plum wine, and sit near the grave of Grandpa Tillo, laughing through their tears.

Personality: Cheerful, sentimental, and a bit chaotic

Notable Detail: The children play tag between the headstones, while the parents insist “Tillo would have wanted it this way.”

Quote (Mother Greenwhistle):

“This is what he loved most—sunshine, mischief, and a good cheese wheel.”

Hook: One of the kids finds something buried or carved behind Grandpa’s tombstone—a forgotten family heirloom or secret that could lead to a side quest.

3. Sister Amalina of Sune

Race: Human

Role: Flower Keeper / Devoted Clergywoman

Appearance: Robed in white and pink, hair tied with silken ribbons, always seen holding a stunning bouquet of perfectly arranged flowers

Personality: Gentle, graceful, and obsessed with beauty—in all forms

Routine: She tends the graves of deceased clergy of Sune, refreshing their bouquets daily. Each arrangement is a work of art, incorporating symbolism of love, flame, and grace.

Quote:

“Even in death, beauty must be honored. The body fades, but the soul shines ever brighter.”

Hook: She may ask the party to retrieve rare petals or sacred sun-kissed herbs from dangerous places to use in her bouquets. Or she has seen something strange blooming near a crypt that shouldn’t be there…

4. Gromli Turfcleaver

Race: Dwarf

Role: Groundskeeper

Appearance: Stocky, in dirt-stained overalls, wielding a long-handled shears and a gnarled broom; his beard is neatly braided, but dotted with grass clippings

Personality: Gruff, efficient, and surprisingly poetic when talking about lawns

Quote:

“You let the weeds in the graves, you let chaos win. Order starts at the roots, I say.”

Fun Detail: Gromli talks to the grass. No one’s sure if it listens.

Hook: He’s discovered strange footprints on the graves by morning—far too large to be a rat, and they glow faintly at night.

He might hire the party to watch the grounds after dark.

5. Sir Varrak Dunsilver

Race: Dragonborn (Silver)

Role: Noble (or at least he insists he is)

Appearance: Polished armor, fine cloak, silver scales shimmering in the sunlight; waving a ledger of names and family lines while arguing with the crypt keeper

Personality: Booming, proud, and frugal

Quote:

“Do you see this bloodline? Look at it! Three knights! One arc-mage! I demand a view!”

Scene: He’s in heated negotiations over the price of a high-tier burial plot, insisting his lineage entitles him to a spot among the Evermores—even though his name isn’t in any of the official books.

Hook: The caretaker might ask the party to verify Varrak’s lineage, or Varrak might try to bribe the party into forging documents proving his nobility. There may be more to his family history than he knows.
