Temple of Selune

The Temple of Selûne stands as a breathtaking monument to the Moon Maiden in the Forgotten Realms. Its immense domed roof gleams silver in the moonlight, reflecting Selûne's sacred radiance. The exterior, made of pale, luminescent marble, is adorned with intricate carvings of crescent moons, stars, and flowing waves, symbolizing the tides she governs. High spires crowned with crescent moon finials rise on either side, casting long shadows during the day and catching the moon's glow at night.

Exterior

The temple’s main entrance is a grand archway flanked by columns of silvery-blue stone. Each column is engraved with scenes from Selûne's mythology, including her battles against Shar and her acts of guidance for lost travelers. Above the entrance, an enormous mosaic of Selûne herself gazes serenely downward, her hands outstretched as if blessing all who enter.

Interior

Upon entering, worshippers are greeted by a vast, open sanctuary. The dome above appears as if it were the night sky itself, an enchantment that makes the constellations twinkle and shift in real-time. A massive chandelier shaped like a crescent moon hangs in the center, with crystal pendants that refract light into shifting patterns resembling moonlight on water.

The walls are lined with mosaics depicting the phases of the moon, each crafted from shimmering tiles of mother-of-pearl and sapphire. A raised dais at the far end of the temple holds the altar, a crescent-shaped structure carved from luminous moonstone. Behind it, a large stained glass window bathes the altar in silvery light during both day and night. The window depicts Selûne riding her celestial chariot across the heavens, her hair flowing like liquid silver.

Side Chapels

Flanking the main sanctuary are smaller chapels dedicated to Selûne’s aspects: one for her role as the bringer of light and hope, with soothing fountains and soft, white flowers; another for her guidance in darkness, lit by ever-shifting blue and silver flames. One chapel houses an observatory, with a large enchanted telescope used to study the night sky and interpret Selûne’s will.

Atmosphere

Soft, ethereal music seems to emanate from the very walls, a constant reminder of Selûne's divine presence. The air is filled with the faint scent of night-blooming jasmine and ocean breezes, evoking a sense of calm and wonder. Devotees move quietly, their footsteps muffled by thick carpets woven with moon and star motifs.

This temple is not just a place of worship but a sanctuary, a beacon of light and hope to those who revere Selûne, offering comfort, guidance, and a tangible connection to her celestial grace.

NPCs

1. Grandmother Iriella Veilshadow

An elderly gnome woman with wrinkled skin and white hair always hidden under a heavy black veil. She never speaks to anyone, spending hours kneeling in the pews with clasped hands. Soft weeping often escapes her, echoing faintly in the temple’s quiet halls.

2. Marvus “The Cleaver” Redhorn

A burly tiefling butcher with crimson skin, a devilish grin, and a bloodstained apron he forgets to remove before entering. He greets newcomers with sales pitches for his sausages and smoked meats, loudly joking that Selûne smiles more on “well-fed bellies than empty ones.” His piety is questionable, but his charm makes him hard to dismiss.

3. Loria and Brann Underbrush

A halfling couple, kneeling reverently side by side, murmuring prayers with unbroken concentration. Their three small children, however, run wild through the temple—shrieking, climbing onto pews, knocking over candle stands, and generally sowing chaos. Loria and Brann seem oblivious, devoted entirely to their worship.

4. Zorla Ironveil

A sharp-eyed duergar woman in dark gray robes who prowls the temple’s quieter corners. She sits beside lone worshippers with a conspiratorial smile, whispering questions about local scandals, politics, and secrets. She frames it as “concern for the community,” but clearly delights in gossip.

5. Thalindra Windsong

A young elf acolyte with long silver hair and the poise of someone who desperately wishes she had poise. She is hopelessly clumsy—tripping on her own robe, dropping hymnals, spilling holy water, and hiccupping mid-prayer. Despite her nerves, she beams with earnest devotion, determined to serve Selûne no matter how many times she fumbles a candle.
