Shiny

Pickpocket

Race: Kenku (Pigeon-esque)
Affiliation: None (Street Thief, Lone Scavenger)
Personality: Curious, Skittish, Compulsive, Endearing

Appearance:

Shiny is a small, scruffy pigeon-like kenku, his feathers a patchwork of dull grays streaked with iridescent hints of purple and green that shimmer faintly when caught in the light. His beady black eyes dart constantly, scanning for potential “shinies” to snatch. A tattered, oversized dark cloak drapes awkwardly around his hunched frame, with stolen trinkets occasionally jingling faintly from hidden pockets as he scurries through the streets.

Personality:

Shiny is driven by a compulsive fascination with anything bright, colorful, or reflective—from gemstones and polished coins to shards of glass, buttons, and scraps of ribbon. His thefts aren’t malicious; they’re more like a magpie’s instinct, an overwhelming urge to collect. He’s skittish and quick to flee if confronted, but also oddly bold when fixated on acquiring a particularly attractive object.

Communication with Shiny is both amusing and challenging—he can only mimic words and phrases he’s heard. His most common response to any question is simply:

  • “Shiny!”
If pressed for his name, that’s the only answer he gives.

He speaks in disjointed echoes, stringing together mismatched words from various sources, which can create both humorous misunderstandings and cryptic clues.

Abilities:

  • Expert Pickpocket: Shiny has advantage on Sleight of Hand checks when stealing small objects, thanks to his nimble fingers and feathered cloak that conceals his movements.

  • Quick Escape: Proficient in Acrobatics and Stealth, allowing him to slip through crowds, dart across rooftops, and vanish into narrow alleys with ease.

  • Mimicry: Can perfectly imitate any sound or voice he’s heard, which he sometimes uses to create distractions during a theft—or to mimic the voices of those he’s recently robbed.

Role in Gameplay:

  • Random Encounter: Players might first meet Shiny as a fleeting nuisance—realizing they’ve been pickpocketed only after he’s vanished into the crowd, leaving a trail of faint jingles.

  • Quest Hook: If Shiny steals something important (like a magical trinket, key, or even a party member’s prized possession), tracking him leads the players on a chase through Lygos’s streets, rooftops, and alleys.

  • Potential Ally: Despite his thieving ways, Shiny can become an unexpected informant. His constant street-level presence and sharp observational skills mean he often knows secrets, rumors, and hidden paths—if players can decipher his mimicked responses.

Nest of Treasures:

Shiny’s “home” is a makeshift nest hidden in a junkyard or crumbling rooftop alcove. The space is a chaotic shrine of stolen odds and ends, meticulously arranged:

  • Glittering buttons

  • Shards of colored glass

  • Loose coins of no consistent currency

  • Broken jewelry, bits of metal, and colorful cloth scraps

  • Occasionally, valuable items unintentionally mixed in (magical rings, lost heirlooms, keys to locked chests)

Players might find not only their stolen goods here but also clues or items connected to other city mysteries.

Key Traits:

  • Compulsive Collector: Shiny cannot resist trying to steal something shiny within reach, even if it’s dangerous to do so.

  • Childlike Curiosity: While wary of strangers, he’s easily lured with bright objects or small treats.

  • Not Evil, Just... Shiny: Shiny doesn’t understand the concept of ownership. To him, if it’s shiny, it belongs in his nest.

Quotes (Mimicked Phrases):

  • “Shiny!” (Most common phrase)

  • “Ooh! Pretty! Gimme!” (Mimicked from a street vendor)

  • “Not yours. Mine. Mine!” (Snapped defensively when caught)

  • “Danger. Bad. Run!” (Possibly mimicked from someone he overheard fleeing trouble)

Adventure Hooks:

  1. “The Great Trinket Heist” – Shiny steals an enchanted gem the players need, leading to a fast-paced rooftop chase across the Central District.

  2. “Feathers of Fortune” – Players discover that one of Shiny’s stolen items holds the key to an ancient lock—or a piece of evidence tied to a major crime.

  3. “Echoes of the City” – Shiny is the sole witness to an assassination, able to perfectly mimic the killer’s voice—but can the players interpret his fragmented clues?

Shiny is a chaotic, charming wildcard, offering moments of comic relief, unexpected plot twists, and a unique NPC who embodies the vibrant, unpredictable energy of Lygos.
